Favorite old photo: Safety check in the 1950s?
2012-08-06 - 100 Block E. Guardian Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from Larry Smith collection. Larry Smith, 92.7 The WAVE radio high above the Russell Creek hills on Road Eighty, found this old Columbia photo in his collection. He didn't know any of the people in the photo, but from the recognizable property around, it would be on East Guardian, behind what is now Downey's Eye Clinic and would have been in a period after the Post Office was moved there. The second parking lot, bounded by the little 1951 Chevrolet coupe to the two tone would have been Houchen's overflow parking, we think, putting the year at around 1958. The white house was the Dagwood Gore, if earlier, Louis & Betty DeRossett, if later, home. In all likelihood the Safety Check was by civic club, auto dealership or church, from the way those fellows were dressed. Any help or comments will be welcome. - CM Best guess so far comes from a known informant whose cover we are sworn to keep. She writes: My guess is Gaspard Brockman for the man with the flat top who is the far right of the men. Standing in front of the car is Hartsell Hodges, I would guess. It will be interesting to see what others guess or think. The man in the suit could be Herschel Toms, former dean at LWC, but not as sure about this one.

Our Lindsey Wilson College Olympian in London: Danny Caluag,
2012-08-06 - London, England, United Kingdom - Photo from David Grigsby. Lindsey Wilson BMX Cycling star, All-American Danny Caluag, looks over the starting hill of the Olympic track on Sunday, August 6, 2012. Caluag, a Californian with dual United States/Philippines citizenship, is competing for the Philippines. He's the first ever Lindsey Wilson Athlete to achieve this highest of all athletic honors as an Olympic competitor. It's another crowning achievement for the sport which most defines Lindsey Wilson's athletic programs - all spectacularly outstanding - in so much of the United States. And to put it in perspective: Competition in cycling, unlike other sports, is broadly based. Lindsey Wilson Cyclists compete against schools whose football, soccer, and basketball programs are NCAA Division I! When a Lindsey Wilson cyclist is All-American or the cycling program is regularly included in the top five teams in the nation - it really means just that - in all the United States. They're the best in America, regardless. No qualifiers! A huge, huge difference for every medal, every honor, every title the amazing Blue Raider cyclists bring back to Columbia! - CM.

Mike Watson - Adair Memorial Hospital Bonds, coupons
2012-08-06 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Mike Watson. Thought this might of some interest, with the ongoing discussions. On the right is a photo of the coupons remaining. From my collection. - Mike Watson

Sign for a short time: Blasting for new school
2012-08-06 - Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Posted for just a few more days: It's a bit disconcerting, but an absolutely necessary warning for motorists nearing the construction site on Indian Drive. This one is on the Greensburg Street side of the Adair County Schools District campus. There's another set of signs above the Adair County Elementary School on the bypass side. On the right above is Adair County High School. On the left, the high fence is around the Tennis Courts. School starts in two days, on Wednesday, August 8, 2012.

Adair Annex is open today - Adair Judicial Center is not
2012-08-06 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. And if you happen to go to the Adair Annex, handouts are available in most offices - in Suite 1, the Judge's office, there are copies of the Adair General's Opinion that the Hospital Tax is recallable and the latest It's Just for a Smile News. What is closed today is the Adair County Judicial Center, for one of the first three Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) budget balancing furloughs. There are no circuit or district court cases on the docket for today, and driver's licenses can't be bought or renewed in the Circuit Court Clerk's office. Incidentally, anyone interested in the Hospital Crisis will find the document interesting.
