Magical Argiope Spiders are doing their thing

2012-08-10 - District 4, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Those unfamiliar with them are often frightened by them and think they are the most wicked looking spider in the world. To those familiar with them, they are almost cherished members of the family, and their prominence in summer and the fallish days are late summer are celebrated. No where are the spiders so honored as around the Argiope capitol of Adair County, Gradyville, KY, where the perfect complement of the insect eating spiders, is at least one in every window. This one wasn't in the epicenter, but still in District Three, at Flatwoods, where Hoss the big lab holds court when Magistrate Perry Reeder is not present.

Freshman experience working FFA Livestock Barn

2012-08-10 - 184 FFA Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Diana Trejo.
Today, Friday, August 10, 2012, on just the second day of school,
some of our new freshmen were able to experience working in our FFA Livestock Barn when Brad Burton called and needed to get a weight on some Holstein heifers. The FFA welcomes anyone from the community to bring their livestock to the barn where they can be weighed on certified scales. Also available is a complete line of livestock health and working equipment. Students are able to learn in hands-on situations not available in other courses. From left, above, are Jarret Martinez, Dakota Smith, and Cody Lawhorn. - Diana Trejo

Epicurean Kentuckian: Roasted Eggplant

2012-08-10 - Photo by Pen. Eggplant roasts beautifully with tomatoes, onion slivers, and garlic. Coated in a mixture of olive oil, red wine, and oregano, and topped with a sturdy cheese like parmesan or asiago, the mix is best when left in the oven until you've forgotten about it and then remembered it again. Here it's served on a bed of mixed greens, and finished with a good balsamic vinegar and just a little extra virgin olive oil.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Steps into history?

2012-08-10 - 500 Public Square - Photo by Ed Waggener.
At first glance the evening sun casts a shadow which almost looks like steps to the roof top on the westside of the Historic Adair County Courthouse. But a closer look could mean only a ramp -the shadow has no stairstep risers. Still, a maybe a bit charming sunny day incident. -EW
