Scenic Adair Co., KY: A beautiful Sunday ahead
2012-08-12 - 2267 Jones Chapel RD, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Saturday, August 11, 2012, was a perfect Summer day. Cloud formations in a spectacular summer sky, with gentle breezes and moderate warm temperatures had residents on the road. Trilby and Sonny Vance said that wanderlust and the need to visit folks and Greensburg and Campbellsville took them there earlier in the day, and that the time was so enjoyable, they made a second sightseeing tour in the afternoon - and still had time and energy for a night time event watching local talent. Sunday, August 12, 2012, is starting off with the same call - today with a call to worship for the majority. The scene above is of one of Adair County's prettiest and lovingly maintained churches. It's not the most pleasing angle, but one dictated by the sun - and by an insistent friend who said the picture had to be taken. We're hoping that everybody who can will be out today, enjoying South Central Kentucky. And if a photo is taken as the congregants enter or leave a church today, we hope it will be submitted for use on our Directory of Churches page. -EW

James Edwin Shirley
2012-08-11 - Flatwoods, KY - Photo by Matt Baker. When you've got it, you can't fight them off. - Or so it seems for James Edwin Shirley, born August 1, 1922 and so about 59 years old, at the Flatwoods Saturday Night show, August 11, 2012, when showgirls Mackie Jo Pennington and Jan Overstreet called him onstage to give him hugs and plant kisses on one of their favorite fans. Mr. Shirley claims to be 90 years old, actually, it was hard to convince the crowd, many of whom are, as Mr. Shirley is, diehard Dream Depot devotees. follow Dream Depot performers at the many venues where members of the Dream Depot cast perform.

Russell Creek to get study by Stantec
2012-08-11 - 109 Grant Lane, Columbia, KY - Photo from map on CAUD office wall. This map from Stantec hangs on the wall of the Columbia Adair County Utilities District to indicate the scope of the study to be done before work to protect the CAUD sewer plant from flooding. The heavy blue line - starting in the upper right, at the Russell Creek Bridge on KY E 80, and extending to near the bottom of the map at a point near the Randy Murray property - indicates Russell Creek, and the red lines represent where 22 cross section studies of the creek and bottoms will be conducted. Stantec will be able to estimate 10 year, 50 year, and 100 year flood levels. The study will be completed before work begins on the project. The company is the largest in its field, and has over 10,000 employees worldwide. CAUD General Manager Lennon Stone updated the utilities board on the project at the Thursday, August 9, 2012 regular meeting.
