Terry Farris, President of Green River Kruzers, arrives
2013-09-02 - Adair Co. Fairgrounds, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. As President of the Green River Kruzers Car Club, Terry Farris is the impresario - the buck stops here man running the show. He showed up a little after daybreak to see that things run right. He was optimistic about today's event. He's expecting what may be a record-breaking number of vehicles on display, and thought the weather at his home in Vester means that, overall, it will be a great day for a car show.

Remember when this was Thomas Price's hog hauler?
2013-09-02 - 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. That's how it began life, 44,000 actual miles ago, when it was seen parked in Thomas & Mavis Price's drive at their familiar Bedford Stone ranch house at the corner of Milltown Church and Corbin-Richards Roads. David Harden, the owner of the 1973 C-10 half-ton Chevy Pickup, was the first exhibitor on the ground in the Green River Kruzers 2013 Labor Day RUN-devous car, tractor, and bike show. The vehicle has a 357 cubic inch V-8 engine, downright dangerous by today's standards. It's not for sale, he said, though he's turned down $20,000, about 4 times its 1973 MSRP new price from Cotton Phelps, and he's got more than that in it. It's already spoken for; it will skip the Josh Harden generation and go to his now 11 year old son, Blane Harden, when the time is right. The car show gets underway officially at 8amCT. Harden said that advance word is that there will be a huge turnout of exhibitors.

The GR Kruzers RUN-devous has food on the way
2013-09-02 - 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Breakfast Shift at the Adair County Jaycees Food booth had breakfast well under way this morning before 7amCT, Labor Day, the day of the huge Green River Kruzers RUN-devous Car, Tractor, and Bike Show. Official start time for the free event is 8amCT. Above Fay Davidson, Jamie Hadley, and Harriet Hadley had biscuit baking before 7amCT to be ready for the big crowd expected today. At right, one of Fay Davidson's three Nu-Wave ovens has 15 biscuits baking and browning the way South Central Kentuckians like them. At around 11amCT, the ovens will see duty as BBQ grills. Steak will bake for some Cuban Salad - but may or may not be sold to the hungry, famished public - it's now owing to what mood they're in - but they may cave to public pressure, regardless. For sure there's breakfast in the morning, hamburgers and hot dogs in the evening, and hot and cold drinks all day. - EW

Epicurean Kentuckian: History-making Fig Joppas
2013-09-01 - Beautiful Joppa - Photo by Maury Lewis. Fig Joppas - "Here is my first try at making a Fig Joppa. They are not real pretty but they are very tasty. I will try some more recipes to see if beautiful Joppa can become the fig bar capital of Kentucky. If anyone has a recipe for me to try I am willing to try it. melewi." And so we all are witnesses to the unfolding of an epic. This is a photo of the first batch of Fig Rolls ever reported to CM which were made from Figs grown in Adair County - these by Danny & Debbie Burris - and baked in Beautiful Joppa, Adair County, KY. Fig Newtons, as it turns out, are trademarked by Nabisco so we can't call them that. And Fig Newtons are not even named for the real Newton, Mike, but for some town in Massachusetts. Actually, these Fig delicacies despite Maury's modest denial, are even prettier, and look to be more tasty, than the factory ones.
