A real sign of fall: The King Pumpkins at White Place
2013-09-25 - 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Dana King. There are pumpkins, cushaws, gourds, and Indian Corn in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors at Dana King's roadside market in her parents', Don and Lois White's home at 6019 Russell Springs Road (Google Map/Directions), Columbia, KY. It's the fourth year the family has grown pumpkins for sale. One very popular - and in short supply, pumpkin - is the red, stackable pumpkins on the chair, called, obviously after one thinks a minute, "Cinderellas." These are quite popular this year. The big pumpkins on the right, "Spartans," are more the traditional jack-o-lantern carving pumpkins for Halloween. There are also pie pumpkins, which more and more people are using as a vegetable or as edible cookware. The roadside market is open most of the time, Dana King says, and will continue through October 31, 2013, she said. If you want to make sure on market open times, call ahead, 270-634-2608.

2013-09-25 - Ransdell Chapel, 401 N Hoskins, Campbellsville, KY - Photo from Kentucky State Police. Kentucky State Police personnel from Post 15, Columbia, KY, present a $1000.00 Trooper Island Scholarship to Justin J Nelson. From left: Post 15 Commander - Captain Jeff Suratt, TFC Billy Gregory, Campbellsville University Student Justin J. Nelson from Breckinridge County; Sr. Tpr. Clint Walker. Trooper Island Camp was developed by the Kentucky State Police as part of a long range program of public service to the youth of Kentucky: a place where the tensions and turmoil of our everyday lives can be forgotten; and for one week young people can be given a touch of hope and desire of a better tomorrow.Spearheaded by former State Police Director, Colonel James E. Bassett, the idea was to establish a permanent recreational site where trooper and child could share a week long experience.A location was selected in a secluded corner of Dale Hollow Lake near the Cumberland and Clinton County line, where an island was leased from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and a non-profit charitable corporation was formed. Over 700 children ages 10 to 12 attend the free camp every year. The camp is funded through donations and fundraisers. TFC Billy R. Gregory
