A Road Trip of Bucket List Proportions: Lights of Liberty
2013-12-29 - 36 Hustonville Street, Liberty, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio. I've made a pilgrimage to Lights of Liberty to visit what is for Prof. A. W. Reed fans a shrine, even though there are no appropriate historical markers here. Every boy should have been so lucky to live a Tom Sawyer life in a wonderful small town like Liberty, Greensburg, or Summersville, and to have been afforded the opportunity to learn a valuable trade, running a movie theatre projector, as Prof. Reed did here when it was the Kentuckian Theatre, and I learned at the old Skyline in Summersville. I was also interested in the retro-Coca-Cola billboard of World War II vintage of the aviatrix and the slogan, "Your Thirst Takes Wings." It was worth the trip across KY 70 to Liberty. Just a hint - they could at least paint a historical marker on the side of the building commemorating this phase of Prof. Reed's early education. - Reed, The Big Dawg, FM 99.9

Fried Green Tomatoes along the trip of Bucket List proportions
2013-12-29 - Bluebird Cafe, 202 W Main Street, Stanford, KY - Photo by Alan W. Reed. The Fried Green Tomatoes at Stanford, KY's famed Bluebird Cafe, with coffee and water, were a brunch meal for me. They are good as the gorgeous presentation photographed by A.W. Reed looks. Easily worth a drive to Stanford to sample. Our history guide, Chris Bennett pronounced his turkey club and fries exceptional, and Mr. Reed's, more venturesome, had a Fried Green Tomato BLT a great combination of the the three basic food groups. - EW.

Great art of the world: The Big Dawg sculpture
2013-12-29 - The Big Dawg studio, Campbellsville, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio. Our station 99.9 The Big Dawg now officially owns this wood carved Blood Hound. Taylor County Fair Board donated the hound to the Big Dawg Toys For Kids program to be auctioned off to provide Christmas to our needy children. During last seasons Taylor County Fair the Woodcarver Dennis Beach was my guest talking about the chainsaw art and I ask him if he would carve a "Big Dawg" and he said no problem and he did and the dog has been on display in our window since June. The Dog was purchased by Brandon Cox of Campbellsville, KY for $500.00, Cox the came to the station and paid the $500.00 and sent me a message that he would sell the radio station the dog, so I called him and we bought it...This dog is a real eye catcher in our showcase studio on Main Street in Campbellsville and for many years to come this wood carved dog will be a conversation piece. Who knows, it may surpass the RCA logo, 'His Master's Voice' as the most famous logo in the world. - LARRY SMITH, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM, Campbellsville, KY

Scenic Casey Co., KY: The Lights of Liberty
2013-12-29 - 36 Hustonville Street, Liberty, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Prof. A. W. Reed was happy to find that, contrary to Thomas Wolfe, you can go home again and find things a lot like they were, with improvements. The Lights of Liberty picture show is right where the Kentuckian theater, where he learned the projectionist trade from the 30 year Lord of the Projection booth, Clyde Goodin, as a teenage growing up on Taylor Street, just a few blocks north of the theater. Lights of Liberty is, for the moment, the only Downtown theater in the 7-County area still in operation at an original location. The building is slightly different, but due respect has been paid to its heritage.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Breakfast by Chef Ev
2013-12-29 - EK Country Kitchen - Photo by Linda Waggener. Ev and Granddad cooked breakfast early this morning: Curried-curried-curried chicken stir fry. Evan picked the spices and contents, diced most of the vegetables, and directed the sequence of cooking. Most importantly, was the spice chef, adding just the right amounts of curry, red pepper. curry, tandoori spice, black pepper, red pepper and curry. He likes curry. Got a private bottle of masala in his 2012 Christmas stocking. The dish contained grilled chicken cubes, potatoes, onion, celery, and, at the last minute, whole spinach leaves. We thought it very good. At least there wasn't any left. The corn - homage to the famous Leatherwood Creek corn breakfast, by prepared by Libby's - just heated and served; the tomatoes also came from an aisle at the supermarket. We're planning it again sometime, Ev's thinking of ways to improve it. But we, Granddad and I, thought it perfect. The best we'd ever eaten. Dishes which would have taken a premium at the fair, as Ev's great grandfather would have said. - Linda Waggener
