Mr. Walker's Tobacco Setter from Doug Janes collection

2014-02-17 - 106 S Reed Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Doug Janes.
Mr. Horace Walker with the tobacco setter he invented. On the back of the photo in Doug Janes' collection a note puts the date as ca. 1942 - that's the year on the truck with license tag AA5. Mr. Walker sold thousands of "Walker Leader" wood stoves. The tobacco setter was patented. In addition, he did a lively business selling "Walker's Pure Herb Tonic," whose popularity most certainly must have been it's healing power, not it's 32 Proof alcoholic content in Prohibition days. The building, at 106 South Reed, looks much the same today, and houses one of Kentucky's greatest business traditions, first as Walker's Tin Shop, later Cole Tin Shop, and now Burton's Tin Shop, just one block from Mr. Janes' boyhood home, and home today. One would wonder if anyone recalls using one of the machines and whether it was simply pushed by hand or if it were featured mule assistance. - EW

The Giles House at Spout Springs, Adair County, KY

2014-02-17 - 360 Spouts Springs Road, Knifley, KY - Photo CM staff photo. Pretty in all seasons. Not the most perfect portrayal of this most iconic Adair County scenes - but does very well. It's still an interesting with the reflections and the winter time alignment of the Giles House chimney and the copse of Eastern Red Cedar in the hillside backdrop. Middle right of center is Henry Giles' man cave - he didn't call it that - the Becky House. And behind, the old Spout Springs School House.
