Restaurants on Jamestown Hill
2014-04-27 - Uptown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It's out in the country, almost a mile from Downtown - but the area from Hurt Street to LBN Parkway Interchange 49 is Restaurant Row. In sight above are signs for McDonald's, Subway, Pizza Hut, Dickey's BBQ (restaurant closed for the moment but their's mention of a reopening, possibly as a "Cookout"), and Wendy's. The new Taco Bell is on the left, but for now there's no sign. That's six. In addition, within easy walking distance, there's a Mexican Restaurant, Fiesta Mexico; a Sonic, a Chinese restaurant, Tray's Garden; that makes nine strictly restaurants. In addition - there's a a place for hot dogs and sandwiches in the Speedway, a breakfast bar in the Best Western; and a full sandwich and plate lunch deli in the IGA. Usually, there's a least one food truck, too, offering subs, BBQ or other fare, in the parking lot by Taco Bell. That makes a baker's dozen places in a .2 mile radius, 12 of them open most days. -EW
Scotty Shelton says Add Five-Star to list of plate lunch lunches on Restaurant Row

Happy Tail: King of the Mountain
2014-04-27 - Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer. New Playground I bought a staircase at the auction Saturday. Daisy, Lil Bit, and Lena found it a great new playground and were playing King of the Mountain on it as soon as they discovered it. - Peg Schaeffer Clicking Readmore accesses a delightful Sunday read which is as much about horses as about dogs: A hilarious Happy Tail: The Grass is Greener. Read forewarned; the author's impetuousness may be contagious - one may find oneself wanting lots and lots of dogs and horses.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Strawberry/Blueberry Custard Tart
2014-04-27 - Farmers Market, 424 Public Square, - Photo By Ed Waggener. As a child, the first time I ever tasted custard, I wondered why any human would ever want to to drink anything else. Three score years later, I haven't changed my mind. Custard in all it's forms hints of Heaven - and this one, at the Farmers Market on the Square was quite a breakfast delicacy, the creation of Steve Chundy of Harvest Cafe, who used fresh strawberries and fresh blueberries to top the custard on pie crust tart. Great as it was, it will be better when local Adair County and Metcalfe County Blueberries come in, and when the strawberries can be bought right at the market. It was served right next to one of Market Coordinator Barbara Armitage's most appreciated innovations, an outdoor hospitality tent. There was usually one or more seats available during the day - but it was very busy throughout the event. While I was there I got to visit with a group from Adair Friends & Neighbors - excellent company, and watch the entertainment, the passing parade on the Square, and the steady stream of petition signers at Wendy Butler-Burt's station, and the candidates who have been finding a Saturday morning visit a must do. - Ed Waggener
