A.J. - sole survivor of nine puppies - explores LWC

2014-05-04 - Lindsey Wilson College, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer.
A.J. explores the Lindsey Wilson Campus
while there to give a presentation with Chelsey Solomon. Tuesday, I packed her backpack with her blanket, a bandana, her dish and some food. Off she went. I was like a Mom on her child's first day at school. I kept looking at the clock. Chelsey texted a picture of A.J. to me. She looked so cute. She was a hit with the students. Everyone wanted to hold her. She went exploring on campus and even got to go to the girls' dorm. She napped for a while before she came home and was wide eyed and bushy tailed when she got back. - PEG SCHAEFFER

Scenic Marion County, KY: Badin Pond

2014-05-03 - Sisters of Loretto Motherhouse, Marion County, KY - Photo by Kenny Browning, The Feedman.
Badin Pond
Located on the grounds of the Loretto Motherhouse, off of Hwy 152 in Marion County, Kentucky. The Loretto Motherhouse is the traditional "home place" for the Sisters of Loretto, and a spiritual center for the broader Loretto Community, 'which seeks to praise God and serve the near and farther neighbor by educating ourselves and others in the ways of peace and justice.' We are located on 788 acres in Nerinx, Ky., about 60 miles from Louisville. The Loretto Motherhouse property has been a working farm from the time Reverend Stephen Badin purchased the land in 1796 and named it St. Stephen's Farm. It became home to the Sisters of Loretto in 1824, the center from which Loretto sent teachers to the western frontier and, later as far as China, South America, Africa, and Pakistan. The 788-acre property today is the permanent home for about 100 sisters and co-members and includes the farm, a licensed long term care facility, residential buildings, and two retreat centers. As much as possible, the Community's spiritual values guide our decision-making and planning at the Motherhouse. - Kenny Browning, the Feedman. Seen in the ColumbiaMagazine group on Flickr.

A picture of grief . . .

2014-05-03 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Melissa Stone.
. . . and a sad commentary on society - This billy goat is looking across a pasture where three of his nannies lay dead after some heartless individual thought it would be sporting to shoot such docile creatures while they were housed in a pen and had nowhere to go. Not only were they the property of a man who would give the shirt off his back to anyone he thought might be in need; they were loved and cared for like pets. Each was named with care by grandchildren who adored them. It is a sad commentary on society when human beings can perpetrate such acts of senseless cruelty. - Melissa Stone
