Progress: Wid Harris is bringing back whittling

2014-05-13 - 401 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Columbia Barber Wid Harris, proprietor of Town Barber Shop, is helping to revitalize Downtown Columbia, by bringing back whittling. He's giving away red cedar whittling sticks. Time was, a body could have been in the whittling business in a hurry, downtown. They could have walked a few yards to C.R. Hutchison & Sons and bought a Case knife and whetstone and shaving cedar curls as thin as a microtome cuts. Back then, pocket knives were a big reason to come to town. They could be bought at Rice Hardware on Monroe Street, and at Jeffries Hardware as well. Town Barber shop also furnishes a whittling bench in front of the store. Wid says whittling is therapeutic; it reduces stress, he says.
