Bill Troutwine captures swarm of honeybees
2014-05-14 - Pellyton, KY - Photo by Bill Troutwine. Bee swarmI thought CM readers may enjoy a couple of pictures of a honey bee swarm I captured yesterday evening (5-13-14). I would like to encourage all your readers to help preserve the honey bee. Our bee population is in drastic decline nationally, and I understand here in Kentucky we lost around 50% of our bee population this last winter.

Election 2014: Joe Rogers for Adair County Judge Executive - II
2014-05-14 - Columbia, KY - Photo Campaign Photo.
Vote for JOE ROGERS
for Adair County Judge Executive
As election-day approaches, I want to take this final opportunity to ask for the support of the Democratic community as I seek election for the office of Adair County Judge Executive. May 20th is rapidly approaching and it is time to choose the right candidate to run in the fall. I believe I am the right candidate.
I have been the 6th district magistrate for 24 years and I feel that positions me uniquely to address the issues that are so important to my fellow Adair countians. I know the ins and outs of county and state government and have received ongoing (over 680 hours of) training and education as a government official over the course of my tenure.
As an agribusiness man, I am acutely aware of the importance of managing money. I want the opportunity to ask the tough questions that need to be asked when presented with budgets and expense reports. The, "how" and "why", questions need answers before money is spent. This is part of the job, but far from its entirety.
I have met with many people during my campaign and the concerns shared with me are the same concerns I have for our future. We need industry and business to come to Adair County, now, to address immediate needs. Past that, though, a vigorous, sustainable and growing economy is crucial for future generations. I promise to reach out to contacts I have in Frankfort and across the state while working diligently with state and local government to foster relationships that will guarantee success.
Persons or industry looking to establish new business in Adair County will require a hospital. That is one reason it is imperative that we have a hospital here. The hospital is crucial for the welfare of the citizens of Adair County. I will not stand idly by and allow special interest groups or individuals to succeed at the expense of the citizens of this county.
I want the opportunity to serve Adair County as County Judge Executive. I promise to put the people of this county first and foremost in any decision I make while in office.
Sincerely,
- Joe Rogers

Downtown Columbia, KY: Full moon over clocktower
2014-05-14 - 500 Public Square - Photo CM Staff Photo. After an upbeat Fiscal Court meeting - Tuesday evening, May 13, 2014, there was a portentous full moon greeting those exiting the meeting. Lee Ann Jessee gave a report on progress at the Historic Adair County Courthouse and Ellen Zornes (That's Z-O-R-N-E-S) and Holly Grimsley presented the Trail Town, USA program which radiates from Downtown Columbia, where the centerpiece - the *Brass Rail - is the Historic Courthouse. (*Brass Rail - a symbol of pride. Term originated at Lindsey Wilson College, where an actual brass rail is maintained in military inspection readiness. Now the term is a part of the Adair County lexicon. See JIM: An Ornament to the Town for elaboration and a Brass Rail photo by Larry Smith which inspired the JIM Essay.
