Wid Harris passes a baton to Matt Bevin
2014-05-18 - Town Barber Shop, 402 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. While his entourage was marching on the street by the courthouse from the tour bus parked in front of the Jeffries Building, U.S. Senate Candidate Matt Biven came by sidewalk with one of his sons and ran into Wid Harris at the town barber shop. Wid is currently campaigning to bring back whittling on the square by passing out A-1 Excellent Eastern Red Cedar sticks. It struck a chord with Bevin, reminding him of his whittling days in school in his youth in New England. As an FFA member - or maybe as a 4-H Club member - he used to whittle wooden chickadees, he said. Later, at a large gathering in front of the Adair Annex, Bevin retold the chance encounter, the chickadee account, and used the cedar stick as a pointer to emphasize points in his agenda. Life in the Holler/Birds of KY: Cardinal with plenty of attitude
2014-05-18 - The Holler, Old Clearsprings Road, Ozark, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District photo. Even with a good hair day, this boy Cardinal, in real life is showing more attitude than UL's famous mascot. I think he's saying, 'I'll pose for you, but it's a danged interference. Make it quick.' So I did. - Shamarie

Xzibit, on his way from Coburg, KY, to Caledonia, MI
2014-05-18 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. It's the unexpected moments - there are always many - which make Columbia's unique Farmers Market on the Square the most interesting Saturday's in any Downtown in in the past 60 years. The gentlemen above had just rendezvoused with Chris Anderson, the star entertainer of the day to pick up Xzibit, a registered Boer Goat. The young men are Andrew Anderson, Chris' nephew and his friend Austin Welch. They had arrived in a Toyota Prius, with Andrew's father, and would return to their home in Caledonia, MI, with Xzibit riding in the cabin of the hybrid vehicle with the three people occupants. They anticipated no trouble whatever, as Xzibit exhibits the most elegant decorum - for a goat or man. The young men are very active members of their FFA. Caledonia, MI, (Google Map), is 488 miles from the Farmers Market on the Square, and that takes 7 hours and 39 minutes (not factoring in travel in a Prius with 3 men and a Goat) travel time. We hope their visit to FM2 won't be their last one. - ED WAGGENER

Hallway of Historic Courthouse has new flooring
2014-05-17 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. The Hallway of the Historic Adair County Courthouse never looked better than it does today. Renae Watson, left Mike Watson, and Lee Ann Jessee, were discussing the the new hallway tile installed during the past week, along with painting done by Lindsey Wilson volunteers and other improvements to the courthouse. On no particular schedule, Mike Watson was offering tours of the building today. The Watsons were minding the store for Watson Publications of Columbia & Harrodsburg, KY, and for the Adair Heritage Association. Lee Ann Jessee, director of the Adair County Public Library, was downtown today to read to kiddies and give away free balloons.- EW
