Scenic Barren County, KY: Wigwam on US 31W

2014-05-27 - 601 N Dixie Highway, Cave City, KY - Photo by Larry Smith. Larry Smith, Operations Manager for Shoreline Communications, took this photo on a day trip over Maxie's Knob, through Munfordville, Horse Cave, and above, in Cave City, Barren County, KY, at the Wigwam Village No. 2, 601 N Dixie Highway, Cave City, KY. According to Tom Chaney, in his epic essay, History on Wigwam Villages tidied up, enhanced, a bit, this was the second of seven built, and one of only two extant today. The other is in Arizona. The entrepreneur who started the chain was a client of Mr. Chaney's father. It's a fascinating read, one which, with this photo, may entice more to see the wonderful and historic slice of Americana and our country's long romance with the open road. According to Wikipedia, there are three remaining in operation, all listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Beside the one in Cave City, there is Wigwam Motel No. 6 on Route 66 in Holbrook, Arizona, and No. 7 in Rialto/San Bernardino, California. (See Wikipedia/Wigwam Motel), and, oh yes, they are tipis, mistakenly called wigwams - CM

Tillie & Hailey: Horseback riding

2014-05-27 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. Tillie and Hailey were having fun riding their favorite mounts when this equestrienne scene was captured. Tillie now just barely three - since Sunday, and Hailey, two in January, must have inherited their love of horses from their Great Mema, Geniece Marcum. Hardly anything elicits the glee when a real horse is met. - Granddad, Ed Waggener

Palette for Paintastic Birthday Party

2014-05-27 - Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Pen. This was the palette for Tilly's Paintastic 3rd Birthday party. The rub off body paint didn't remain so neat as a dozen or so little girls made themselves pretty painting toes, arms, shins, and faces with (self) satisfying results.
