Academic? or Athletic? Papaw gets a smile

2014-06-02 - Centenary United Methodist Church, Shelbyville, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Evan Smith Waggener had a pretty good gallery for his 5th grade graduation. His Papaw, Ken Smith of Flat Woods (Greenup County; not one of the two Flatwoods, KY, in Adair; their Flat Woods has a Wheeler Hill Road, just like we do in our Flatwoods off KY 61), KY, we think, is mentioning a real highlight of the day, going to a Baseball Game in Louisville, KY, after school that day, while his Nona, Kay Smith posed for the family photo. She's a retired teacher, and, among other things, keeps the kids sights on academic accomplishments.

Burkesville Street, KY: Time to calm it 24 hours a day

2014-06-01 - 100-400 Blocks of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM Staff Photo. The 2014, a Local Election Year may be an opportune time to reclaim Burkesville Street, with traffic calming measures. Simple measures would add badly needed parking downtown, make the sidewalk safer for pedestrians and the streets safer forcyclists, bring back more residents to downtown, and improve the health of the community, and for sure, improve economic development. Traffic calming common in Australia and Europe, according to the Traffic Calming entry in Wikipedia. Traffic Calming would reduce through traffic which was supposed to use the bypass, could increase accessibility for residents and office workers and those who wish to do business downtown. Significantly, this crosswalk is the scene of a horrific fatality just a few decades ago. Many believe that the time has come to return to a single lane of traffic around the historic Adair County Courthouse with automobile access and more parking, slowing but not eliminating motor vehicles, while also encouraging vehicles which take up less space. For sure, one traffic calming feature, a protected crosswalk at Jefferson Alley to protect bank employees, is long overdue. - EW

Mr. Robert Montgomery mans 2014 Crusade collection point

2014-06-01 - Public Square & Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Robert Montgomery accepted donations for the 2014 Crusade for Children on the Campbellsville Street entrance to the Square, which seemed to the the hottest part of Downtown, necessitating a stylish sun protection hat. The Columbia/Adair County Fire Department collected funds on the Square today on Crusade Sunday for Columbia and Adair County. This was the Sunday many churches held Crusade Collections. All the of the money collected in Adair County is returned to the county in the form of Crusade Grants. Last year, Adair County surpassed $1,000,000 in cumulative Crusade collections and is now work on the second $1,000,000 for children. A feature which makes this charity stand out from almost all others is that the funds are deposited in a local bank in an interest bearing account. The interest goes a long way toward paying all the administrative costs of the crusade, Chief Mike Glasgow said. - EW
