A Pat on the Back: Downtown Columbia sparkling

2014-06-04 - West Shopping Strip, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. So many of us complain about the pace of renovation and restoration that huge accomplishments are sometimes overlooked. The west side of the Square tells how far we've come in the past few years. Every building from Harvest Cafe to Durham & Zornes is in a high state of repair and - very importantly - occupied on at least the ground floor. That's a great beachhead for Downtown Renewal. A guesstimate is that appoximately 48-50 people are working in the strip. When they aren't, and there are downtown events, one often finds the tables and benches filled with people trying to enjoy the street scene, which will be enhanced many fold when traffic calming efforts take hold. This picture was taken early this morning. There was activity. There would soon be a sign worker putting the name of an addition to a law firm in place. Runners and walkers would be using the sidewalks. A man was already taking in the morning sunshine at the Fountain, just activated for the summer, and in the cafe's coffee was being served and the real news of the town was being exchanged. - EW

Cows critique Vegetable Garden Sunshine art

2014-06-04 - Crocus Mill Farm, Melson Ridge, Adair County, KY - Photo by Wendy Butler Burt.
Immediately after the barn quilt was hung this afternoon, the cattle assembled to check out the new art installation in their Melson Ridge pasture. The pattern, traditionally called Colonial Garden, was re-named Vegetable Garden Sunshine because of the eye-popping ripe vegetable hues.
