Favorite old photo: Doyle Lloyd lightning picture

2014-06-12 - From West of Columbia, KY - Photo Photo by Doyle Lloyd.. First posted on CM way back on this day in 2009, with the following caption: "DOYLE LLOYD took this spectacular picture of nature's light show last night, Thursday, June 11, 2009, and captioned it 'Electric.' Coincidentally, one can't help but notice that the image on the left is trident shaped, while the one of the right has the general appearance of a Christian cross." Thumbing through the slide show one can see Adair County's dashing answer to dancer John Travolta - back before he became the staid, solid, public servant dude he is today. It's in the photo slide show for Daily News for Friday, June 12, 2014 which recorded the way we were, back when a body could still get a good Buffalo Burger right here in Columbia, when memories of the great barn at Happy Hollow was on our minds, when we still had the Dream Depot, and when the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department made history with its first ever pancake breakfast - and a lot more.

A mystery item in Old Burkesville Street photo

2014-06-12 - 200 block of Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo from collection of Dr. James Callison.
A scan of a delightful old photo of Burkesville Street
reveals a mystery item. Near the top of the frame, in the trees, at one o'clock over the car, there's what looks like a street or traffic light fixture suspended over the street. Wonder if anyone noticed before when the picture was posted on CM in May of 2012, with this description: "The Courthouse Clocktower can be faintly made out in this scene looking north on Burkesville Street, in the days when pedestrians were shaded and protected by a line of trees, and by the self limiting speed of the automobiles. The street was wide enough to carry all the traffic of today, and there was on street parking for motorist convenience and even more protection for pedestrians."

Photo-Editorial: A Traffic Calming moment

2014-06-12 - Burkesville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A parked unmanned tourist friendly white police cruiser slowed traffic in a area badly in need of traffic calming this week, as Stotts Construction Company was working on a waterline street crossing on Jefferson Alley. Traffic moved easily with a fairly normal flow for Burkesville Street these days. Made one wonder if maybe dummy cruisers might be utilized as temporary traffic control in other areas. It worked in World War II, and similar fake-outs worked to save the town of Rock Ridge in Blazing Saddles. And oh, yes, for those who think traffic flow is hunky-dory when the pass through our town concerned only with getting to work or taking a short cut to Walmart or the post office, try walking across Burkesville Street at Jefferson Alley, at Fortune Street, at Guardian or Church Streets. I have relatives and acquaintances who would love to walk to town, to the library, to shops and restaurants Downtown, love Historic Columbia as a potentially great walking campus, but are scared to death to cross Burkesville Street even with an escort. Would that a Frederick Law Olmstead were alive and could see Burkesville Street as a blank canvas - what a masterpiece he could immediately conjure in his mind. And what if the power of a mastermind of Adair County art students and Future Problem Solvers, and Greg Easthams and Billy Joe Fudges, and Trail Towners and Parks & Rec People visualized the potential? The results, we think, would be healthy, economically stimulating, and utterly amazing. The synergy is here now. Maybe, just maybe it will happen. - ED WAGGENER

Adair Fiscal Court, with everybody listening hard

2014-06-12 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Just a snapshot with most of the dignitaries and potentates visible and iistening hard. Also listening hard to one of Tuesday night's presenters, off camera, were Magistrates from districts 3, 4, and 5 - Honorable Sammy Baker (3), Perry Reeder (4) and Billy Dean Coffey (5), during the regular June 10, 2014 session of Adair Fiscal Court. Around the table above, from left clockwise are Magistrates Daryl Flatt (2), Harold Burton (1), Sheriff Harrison Moss, Court Recorder Jerri Nixon, Adair County CJE Ann Melton, Treasurer Barry Corbin, County Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin; Magistrates Joe Rogers (6), Billy Rowe (7); Adair County Regional Jailer Rick Wilson, and Adair County 911 Addressing and Mapping Coordinator, who presented the Reading of the Roads, and has become the Man of the Hour with the sudden success of the Trail Town USA initiative. Organizers for Trail Towns have found, so far, that the pieces of the puzzle were mostly already in place - somebody just had to connect the dots - and the work of the 911 Mapping & Addressing coordinator's office would really pay off. For Trails - Columbia already had Robyn Curry's Paddle Trail down Russell Creek, and three bike trails developed by Gary Rose and Bike Adair County. The cake was baked. Trail Towns just had to ice it - not to diminish the fantastically competent and hard work the committee has done. - Clicking Readmore accesses the complete report posted Wednesday morning, and many more photo(s) of the meeting two days ago on June 10, 2014. - CM
