Onion by any other name tastes just as sweet-Not to some folk!
2014-06-13 - 1535 Bull Run Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Barbara Armitage. Fresh from the garden sweet onions will be available at the Tucker's Station Farm's booth at the Farmer's Market on the Square on Saturday June 14, 2014. FM2 is open every Saturday from 8am to 1pm CT at the Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.
At Tucker's Station Farms we grow "Yellow Granex" sweet onions - never heard of them? Well, you may have heard them called by their other name "Vidalia". Vidalia is also a song by Sammy Kershaw, it's about a woman who's not particularly "sweet" but we won't go into that.
Here's an interesting fact: The "Vidalia Onion Act" was passed in 1986 by the Georgia State Legislation trademarking the Vidalia Onion. The only onions that can legally be called Vidalia must be grown within a specified 20 county area of Georgia.
Interestingly the "Vidalia Onion" or it's original name Yellow Granex was developed in Texas by Dixondale Farms.
For information on becoming a Farmer’s Market on the Square vendor contact Barbara Armitage, Market Coordinator, at 270-250-2979 or Tuckers.Sation@gmail.com

I noticed how much she liked writing on the light board there so I got her one of her own for her new Gradyville kitchen. She uses it every day to post the Cool Springs Creek Farm menu. Mystery of the Giant Cactus solved
2014-06-12 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Melvin C. Branham cleared up the mystery of the disappearance of the giant cactus on Russell Road this morning. For those who drove his house, located between the Circle R and the Dollar General Store on Russell Road regularly, it was likely no mystery at all. Less frequent travelers may have thought the owner had removed it, but that's not what happened. The harsh 2013-14 winter killed it, Branham said this morning while on a regular walk around the Square. He said that as it was rotting, it had a stench as bad as any he knew about. Cleaning it up was a huge problem, he said. It wouldn't burn, and the needles kept anyone from picking up the pieces even with gloves. He finally had to shovel up the pieces, load them on a pickup, and have them hauled away. Not to worry, the the plant is started anew, surrounded by tiger lilies and other flowers he's a master at growing. Paired photo: Big cactus at 804 Russell Road, a photo of the cactus almost 5 years ago, when it was a grand sight with mature "tunas" ripening on it, but not as enormous as it was right before it died.
