These little yellow birds can be seen by the dozens among purple thistle this time of year. Females are less vivid, but can still be recognized by their distinctive call and halting flight, which characteristically involves three or four wingbeats with vocalization, and then a coasting drop in altitude with wings tucked tightly to their sides before the next wingbeats lift them again.
