Birds of Kentucky: Doves spend day on window ledge

2014-06-22 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Sue M. Smith. These 2 young doves found their way to the ledge outside my kitchen window on Friday—they stayed there all day until they were inadvertently scared away!! I loved watching them all day long—every time I went to the kitchen, I expected them to be gone, but they stayed from about 10:00 in the morning until around 5:00pm that afternoon. -Sue M. Smith,

Bug at work in Southern Magnolia Blossom

2014-06-22 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Southern Magnolia's in Adair County, KY are showing more of the huge white blossoms. Found someone occupying this one and thought it looked a bit like a lightning bug, a reminder of how delightful fireflies are the the very small children among us. Two year old Hailey was fascinated by the fireflies on Fortune Street she saw last week - so much so that it was a huge disappointment in midmorning her last day here and they didn't perform for her on command. Wikipedia does tell of diurnal fireflies so her idea of daytime lightning bugs wasn't so farfetched, after all. A benefit of "looking it up" was a warning not to eat fireflies. They do look good. But don't eat tem. And some online articles warn of eating any part of a magnolia. We'll wait until after the Edible Flowers class on Thursday, at 1pmCT, at the Chamber Building before putting a magnolia blossom in a salad or skillet -and some online experts say all parts of the tree are poisonous. But it was intriguing to read about pickled magnolia petals and magnolia petals in a salad. Whatever more practical use they may have - one can't deny their beauty. For those who love nuggets of information, the Wikipedia entry: Firefly tells of a phenomenon not far from here: Massive sightings of fireflies blinking in unison near Elkmont, Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains. The article says it occurs in first weeks of June. Wonder if anyone saw it and captured a photo. That being said, at random, would welcome an identification of the bug in the blossom, about magnolia blossom honey, and about edible flowers. - EW
