Berries are abundant at the Adair Farmers Market today

2014-06-24 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Danny & Debbie Burris, D & D Longview Farm, Gradyville, KY have a great crop of berries coming in; they're at the Adair Farmers Market, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY today. Those berries which look a bit like red grapes are gooseberries. These were at FM2, and were very sweet, but as the days of the season pass, gooseberries generally get sweeter and sweeter - today's are the sweetest yet. It's a good time visit the market, today is "Taste of Adair" day, with lots of samples. The market is open from 2pm-6pmCT today.

Poke, Progress & Preservation at a Downtown Private Park

2014-06-24 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo CM Staff Photo. Beyond the pokeberries there's progress at the Christian Church Park, a three acre private sanctuary in sight of the Courthouse Clocktower. The new structure, just completed, houses restrooms. Work continues at the park, Richard Phelps, a church member, said. The parking lot will get a layer of concrete, ramped to be handicap accessible,he said. The larger green roofed structure is the picnic pavilion, which can accommodate gatherings of up to 120. Occasionally, Mr. Phelps said, non-member groups can reserve the park, but primarily it is for Columbia Christian Church activities.

Tim Smith, Columbia Street Dept. checks meter

2014-06-24 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Tim Smith with the Columbia Street Department, has some good news for Columbia Taxpayers - the meter which controls much of the irrigation system on the Square no longer leaks as much as it did. It seems to be coincidental with the the past few weeks work replacing aging and leaky water lines in the Downtown Phase of Columbia/Adair County Utilities District but he isn't sure. It was just a pleasant surprise for him to turn on the line and find that everything was dry down below. He and Roger Coffey, also of the CSD, had the Square almost to themselves this morning tidying the streets and sidewalks before workers and visitors arrived for today's work. - EW
