Murrell Burton remembers business neighbor

2014-06-27 - 408 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Murrell Burton,
whose Burton Real Estate, office is next door to the office of Stanziano & Stanziano - the sign says Stanziano & Catron, it had been updated in Columbia as it had been in Somerset - expressed deep sorrow for the loss. "He was a brilliant attorney," he said, and said he remembered the couple as really nice people. Burton said that the murdered Mark Stanziano did come to the Columbia office occasionally, but not so much as Bethany Catron Stanziano, who handled many criminal defense cases in Adair and Cumberland and other areas more distant from the husband and wife law partnership's Somerset office.

Scenic Green Co., KY: Rainbo Bread screen door, Grab, KY

2014-06-27 - Grab, KY - Photo by Larry Smith, The Big Dawg, 99.9 FM radio.
Grab, KY
, has to be one of the most beautifully preserved old communities still thriving as a real town in the United States. The still have very active stores and churches, but they've also preserved history, the good, the bad, and the heroic, in a way that makes the place real and historic. This store front is on an old Grab store, no longer in operation except in the imagination of passers by, like me. The old Rainbow Bread screen door and the other advertising and implement artifacts bring back memories, even in my mind. And I have to ask, is there any prettier color than the silver gray of weathered wood. If you have a chance, take a day trip, take a picnic, and stop in Jerry Arnett's or Marshell Davis's stores, both will assure you - and I believe them both, that their place is the true center of Grab. No, G-r-a-b is not an acronym - at least not to my knowledge - but there is a story behind its name. In one of the stores, in the early days, there was a barrel of candy, and one could pay a fixed price - I'd imagine between a penny - no more than a quarter - and grab a handful of treats. You got to keep all the candy you could hold. Wow! Wouldn't it be great is Someone in Grab did that today. The price might have to change, but that might even draw 'busloads of Canadian tourists' as some are wont to say in Columbia, to Grab. If they came once, they likely eventually take over. I never visit Grab without wanting to stay myself. - LARRY SMITH, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.
