Slide prevention wall taking shape at waste water plant

2014-06-30 - CAUD Wastewater Plant, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The long concrete wall at the base of the hill behind the Columbia/Adair County Utilities District Wastewater Plant is well underway. The footer has been completely poured, and forms were being put in place by Professional Concrete Services (PCS) workers on Friday, June 27, 2014 when this photo was taken. The tallest part of the wall will be backfilled with soil. The work is being done by subcontractor PCS, a Danny & Sandy Pyles company, for Dakota Meyer Construction Co, the prime contractor. The top of the hill is on Wall Street, near the Wall Street entrance to the Columbia City Cemetery. The hillside is owned by the utility company.

The Floral Hall, the 1884 Building

2014-06-29 - Adair Co. Fairground, 413 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo.
The building above dates from 1884 and still stands.
The first fair was held in mid-August 1884 at the Association's grounds in Columbia and lasted four days. The ACAA had constructed an amphitheater, racecourse, music and judges stand, stock barns, etc. Food booths were abundant, but many families brought their lunch baskets. The amphitheater was oval and set inside the present racetrack, among the grove of trees. Inside the amphitheater was the show ring. The horse shows were the highlight of all the early fairs. - MIKE WATSON

China dolls, ca 1925, from Metcalfe County, KY childhood

2014-06-29 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Geniece Marcum found these small china dolls which she thinks are from the ca 1925 times. There's two little girls and a baby doll, and they were kept in the wicker basket holding the crocheted hat draped over the handle, which, Mrs.Marcum thinks, goes with the doll in the middle. - CM

Remembering happy face of an American Staffordshire Terrier

2014-06-29 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Celia Downey.
JOSEPH - This is a picture of my American Staffordshire Terrier, who died. As you can see, his face shows who he was, happy in life and well treated. His name was Joseph, because he had a coat of many colors, and deserved a name worthy of him. I have written a book about finding him and then losing him. His loss was such a tragic event, it happened on July 1, 2011 at 6:30am. - CELIA DOWNEY
