Why was this tool vital to local timber industry?

2014-07-02 - CM 7 County area: Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Metcalfe, Russell or Cumberland Counties, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. What is it? What is it's use. In another quite different form, tools which come under this one's broad general name are fairly common. This one seems to be quite rare. A hint is that it was once essential to the timber industry. Pretty patriotic part of town, July 2, 2014

2014-07-02 - 200 Quadrant, Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Columbia City Street Department Employees put out flags early this morning, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 for the Fourth Independence Day Celebration. Mayor Mark D. Harris' Just In Time approach seems to be working really well. The flags still look brand new. The idea is theatrical in its concept. And it's a far cry from the day many of remember when Columbia was the town with the year round Christmas lights on its courthouse. - EW

Excellent explanation for 'Woman in gardening hat' image

2014-07-02 - Theatre Walk, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo CM staff photo. There's an excellent explanation from professional photographer/writer April Shepperd for the apparent image of a 'Woman in a Gardening Hat' which was coincidental in a photo about a vine growing on a Ben Arnold Building along the Theatre Walk. The hat is a reflection of this hamburger sign in Moore's Pool & Lunch, she says, To see the other photo, click to Poison Ivy along the Theatre Walk? or something benign?

View from Big Four Bridge

2014-07-01 - Over Ohio River, Louisville, KY-Jefferville, IN - Photo by Tommy Bailey. This view is looking up the Ohio River - east - from the Kentucky side of the Big Four. The observation deck is at the Louisville Waterfront Park. Louisville, KY - Jeffersonville, IN Big Four Bridge

2014-07-01 - Over Ohio River, Louisville, KY-Jefferville, IN - Photo by Tommy Bailey. The center lane is marked for bicycles, but often when none are near, families spread across the entire width of the one time rail span. The view here is toward Jeffersonville. My wife, Jennie, and I were in Indiana on other business, and on the way home we decided to take a look. We parked on the Indiana side, and it turned out to be a great choice. Parking is better there, and they have excellent security for the bridge . . . the same as Louisville has. We were surprised at how busy the bridge is. - Tommy Bailey
