Wildflowers of KY: Coneflower amid Queen Annes Lace

2014-07-23 - Allen Schoolhouse Road, Adair County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Queen Anne's Lace is extraordinarly beautiful in late even sunlight, especially when a little coneflower is mixed in, as it is in random roadside bouquets along Adair County byways this time of year. Never tried it, but the Wikipedia entry Daucus Carota has a paragraph about changing the color of the white flowers of Queen Anne's lace by putting the stems in colored water, letting the flowers take on the color of the water. Many of us remember, that, as kids, the flowers were allowed in the house because they'd carry bugs with them. Interestingly, this same article cites a conflict in agriculture: The plant, the article says, has proven beneficial to tomato production and is a beneficial weed. On the other hand, a powerful bureacracy, the USDA, lists it as a noxious week, and a pest in pastures, according to the Wikipedia entry. - CM
