Birds of KY: Boybird Cardinal with an attitude

2014-08-04 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Male cardinals always seem to pose with an attitude. It puzzles me. Can't tell whether they are all posturing for the camera like a government official at a televised meeting, angling for lens time; or they are hoping to be the model for a ball team, or it's their dinosaur DNA showing through four million years of evolution. Whatever, menacing as the look is, this guy was nattily sharp in his blood red suit, and got a teeny bit of lens time. - EW

Blackaby Hills Kikos raised to be registered breeding stock

2014-08-04 - Blackaby Hill Farm, Adair County, KY - Photo by Lisa Blackaby.
Morgan is the granddaughter visiting us from Baltimore. She loves the goats at Blackaby Hill Farm. The goats are Kiko breed. We started the Kikos for their maternal instincts, parasite resistance and low foot maintenance. Our goats are mainly raised and sold as registered breeding stock but they all don't make the cut. We will be offering goat meat in the near future along with our chicken and pork. - Lisa Blackaby

Tillie made a visit

2014-08-04 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Granddad.
Tillie, now totally three now, paid a busy visit to Great Mema, Mema and Granddad yesterday. She explored the house, found secret places only her dad knew about, added art to the Kids Only art 'studio', sculpted Play Dough, sang one of her new original songs, and above, demonstrated her ready-to-catch stance for a miniature football her Dad would throw. She also examined every single piece of playground equipment at Jim Blair Park with excited approval each, before leaving with her Dad, Tom Waggener, for home in Shelbyville. - GRANDDAD

Christ in a Manger IV

2014-08-04 - Fairplay, KY - Photo by Lila Loy.
The flower is fully open and the manger scene, the Nativity, can be seen. It will close before daybreak and then wilt. The plant can survive in Kentucky weather but needs to be taken inside during the colder months. It will be another year before the phenomenon will happen again. The flower blooms only this one night then it dies. They also smell wonderful. - Lila Loy
