We are all cousins: An important call from one

2014-08-25 - Photo by Mema, Linda Waggener. We got an important call last night from Hailey with the dancing eyes and now, dancing feet. She was excited, her mother told us, about an outing to the lake with her brothers 'Mem and Evan - 'Mem is still Haileyspeak for Graham. She was so excited that she told her mother, "I've got to call Mema and Granddad - my cousins," and we can only surmise that she's been listening to all the talk of universal kinship - "Everyone is everyone else's umpteenth cousin" - on NPR so much lately. Not bad for a lass of her age. When I was growing up, everyone out to third, fourth, and moreth cousinship were referred to as Cousin followed by their full name, as in "Cuddin Ralph Willis, etc., etc. Beyond that kinship, the bestowal of "Cousin," or "Cuz," or "Cuddin" added warmth and affection to any relationship. The reflection in the doorway is of another of Hailey's special "Cousin" - Great Mema Geniece Marcum, the big hand that of her Dad. - Granddad, Ed Waggener.

Epicurean Kentuckian: Brunch, with Main Dish okra

2014-08-25 - E Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. I'm always disappointed after going to the Farmers Market on the Square - disappointed that I didn't buy four times as much. That was the case when I didn't buy more tomatoes, more farm fresh eggs, and more purple okra from Donna Jones. I did get enough to table test the okra three times, and everyone - Linda, and Great Mema, Geniece and the cook - agreed that our variation of fresh okra sauteed in olive oil with a little sea salt has to be a family staple from now on. Our variation is to add dried onion bits while frying, then more at serving time and splash more olive oil over it all to finish. Some of the onion bits soften a bit, but the crunch of those which don't is a nice added texture. The mild flavor and tenderness of Donna's purple okra is great, even eaten raw in a garden salad. - EW
