Procession carrying Capt. Grider Home: Campbellsville colleagues
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. On the right, Larry Walker, a member of an iconic firefighting family waves an American flag greeting members of Capt. Tony Grider's Campbellsville Fire Department, as units pass. Hardly a vehicle passed without occupants betraying overwhelming grief. Perhaps in no other area of life in South Central Kentucky have county lines been erased as they have been between firefighters; the selfless mutual aid between Columbia and Campbellsville is decades old. SEE: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014)

Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home: The Moment
2014-09-21 - 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Everyone knew, even if the Supporting Heroes van had no markings noting its role that this van was carrying the earthly remains of Capt. Tony Grider home to Columbia. The only sounds to be heard as it passed was weeping, choked back tears, and, overhead, the faint sound of high flying news aircraft. The van made a well deserved victory lap for Capt. Grider around the Historic Square Capt. Grider so deeply loved, to return a few moments later to the spot where Grissom-Martin Funeral Home director Blake Martin is standing, above, at attention. - Ed Waggener SEE: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014)

Procession carrying Capt. Tony Grider Home: Ladder One
2014-09-21 - 200 Block Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. There wasn't a dry eye in Columbia as Ladder One passed in review by the silent crowd whose shadows line the street, to honor the procession carrying Captain Tony Grider home. The apparatus has now become a symbol of even more greater significance than that of a progressive community. It was on a similar apparatus owned by brother firefighters in Campbellsville that Capt. Grider suffered injuries on 21 Aug 2014 which eventually resulted in his death 30 days later, on Saturday, 20 Sep 2014. - Ed Waggener

Fall's officially one day away: But there's fall produce aplenty
2014-09-21 - 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Dana King. Fall is officially here tomorrow, 22 Sep 2014. But on Russell Springs Road, across from the Christine Road cutoff, Dana King has a roadside stand at her parents', Don and Lois White's, home at 6019 Russell Springs Road, Columbia, KY, which argues, along with school in full flight and football the talk of the region, fall is here today. This is the fifth season the family has grown pumpkins for sale, and each year the line of edible and decorative pumpkins for sale grows. This year, Dana King says, already, "We have pumpkins, mums, straw, Indian corn, Cushaws, corn shocks, gourds, and pie pumpkins." The roadside market is open most of the time, Dana King says, and will continue through Halloween, October 31, 2014, she said. If you want to make sure on market open times, call ahead, 270-634-2608. - Ed Waggener
