Scenic Adair Co., KY: Steep, steep Hood Cemetery Road

2014-09-24 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The views from little known Hood Cemetery Road are spectacular. It seems like a trip down a West Virginia mountain side. This scene was captured earlier this week, on a foggy morning, from higher up the hill, catching a switchback below as the road joins Pelham Branch Road. Already there's a hint of fall color, which, we're hearing, will peak at around the end of October, anticipated to be the most beautiful fall ever. - EW (Hood Cemetery Road is steep. If anyone has metrics on just how steep, please let us know.)

Crowds gather before visitation for Capt. Tony Grider

2014-09-23 - 206 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Crowds were beginning to build before visitation started today at the Columbia Christian Church for Captain Tony Grider. Flag lines were out in front of the church and flags at the Adair Judicial Center, City Hall, the Adair County Courthouse, Tony's Columbia home Fire Department and elsewhere were at half staff in his honor. News crews, induding one from an ABC affiliate, were present, but discreetly aside in front of Grissom Funeral Home. Lines extended outside the church even before the official start of visitation at 2pmCT. See obituary: Anthony Lynn (Tony) Grider, Adair Co., KY (1973-2014)

Hal Heiner, who wants to be Governor in Columbia, KY today

2014-09-23 - 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Louisville Businessman Hal Heiner one of two announced candidates for the Republican nomination for Governor of Kentucky, is in Columbia today, Tuesday, 23 Sep 2014, and was visiting on the Square prior to going to Lindsey Wilson for scheduled events with campus Young Republicans. Heiner narrowly lost the last Louisville Mayoral contest. His primary focus seeking the governorship is jobs, he said, but he made a strong statement for preservation. "That's one of the most beautiful public buildings I've ever seen," he said of the building in the background, the historic Adair County Courthouse. "It must be preserved," adding, "I'd a lot rather see it preserved, adapted for new uses, than to see it abandoned for a new building out on the edge of town." The statement acknowledges that preservation and growth can offer synergy to communities such as Columbia. Jobs and economic growth are Mr. Heiner's focus. His own business success has been in developing business parks "out on the edge of town," but he sees parallels in preservation paired with "progress." - EW
