Granddad Polston: Advocating for SAFE Adair County Roads
2014-10-15 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo ColumbiaMagazine.com (c). A poster picture for SAFE Adair County, KY roads:
Grandfather Darrell Polston holding Keeri Wall, and his daughter, Cheryl Wall, behind Hope Wall, lower right in photo, appealed to the Tuesday 14 Oct 2014 Regular Adair County Fiscal Court to do something about speeding vehicles, rogue off road cyclists and ATV operators and cars on Bird Road in Southern Adair County, just above Dirigo.
Cheryl Wall said that it is unsafe for her children to play in their own yard. She asked the court to consider speed bumps, requested cautionary signage, and/or more patrols.
She said she was not complaining, that the present CJE has been helpful, and that the current Sheriff's Departmetn is the only one ever to patrol there, except for, she said, one state lawman, who, she said she later learned, was having a romantic rendezvous - and that was his primary reason for being in the area.
Grandfather Darrell Wall told the court that the road, which goes down the northside Big Hill into the old community of Dirigo, and which carries the rambunctous traffic, may not be officially a county road, that may have been improved without all the right-of-way transfers, but that that was not his main issue.
County Judge Ann Melton told the court that she had been recently informed that the county can put speed bumps on roads. But, rather than take action last night, she suggested a committee thoroughly examine all issues and report their findings to the full court. The committee will include the local Magistrate, Perry Reeder (4), and neighboring Magistrate Sammy Baker (3) and County Road Supervisor Jobe Darnell.
Grandfather Polston said the issue is his grandchildren. Quiet talk after the meeting, included "The county can't afford it . . . and what about school busses . . . what the cost?" Perhaps the the most pathetic of all, "The kids shouldn't be playing in the road," by one who couldn't have listened to the testimony. Both Grandfather Polston and his daughter Cheryl Wall said their concern was for the children's safety while they are playing in their own yard.
