Japanese Giant Hornet found by Tommy Hardison

2014-10-26 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Say "Say WHAAAT?" Tommy Hardison is doing something most would not, and should not, try - He calmed and held what is described as a dangerous insect. Matt Baker of Columbia Security Systems, whose offices are inside the Historic Adair County courthouse identified the creature as a "Japanese Hornet" or, we think but need more expert advice, a "Japanese Giant Hornet." If it is, it is nothing to fool around with - better left to experienced hornet tamers like Mr. Hardison. Matt Baker told him the sting can be quite painful. The Wikipedia entry on the invasive critter says stings can require hospitalization and mentions the word "fatal" in the entry. It also hints that stings come when provoked, recalling how the late varmitologist, Billy Neat, topped Carl Linnaeus/Wikipedia binomial nomenclature by diving all fauna into to kingdoms, "Fractious" and "Non Fractious," leading to warnings: 1) Don't provoke a Japananese Giant Hornet. 2) Don't try to tame one unless you know how to calm it. 3) And three, Give them ground, if you see one. 4) Ask Nick Roy what to do about them if you spot one, two, three or a swarm. the Wikipedia entry says the Hornets prey on other pests, so they may be, on balance good, even if they ony provide another useful phobia for those of us who worry about everything - not just, but including, the 'baggage retrieval they have at Heathrow.' By the way, see the Monty Python video accesses from Today, Today, 26 Oct 2014. - (c) CM

Soft skills 101 - Just visit the Farmers Market on the Square

2014-10-26 - Adair Annex Parking Lot, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo (c) ColumbiaMagazine.com. Wayne Armitage at Tucker's Station Farms, beside the latest banner for the he and Barbara Armitage's very popular "store." The banner now features the beautiful i-Frame house on Bull Run Road which the Armitages have restored. Wayne is a favorite with the market customers. He's sticks to business, but he also has time to tell people about TSF products as well as his specialty, Heavenly Homstead Cheese. He has most of the answers about the wide variety of cheeses he sells - and he's candid about whether he likes them or not. Importantly, when he doesn't have the answer, he almost always knows where to go for the answer. It was the last day of the season at Farmers Market on the Square until the first Saturday in April 2015 or so the plans go now, leaving a lot of the thousands who visited the market this summer anxious for that day. - (c) CM
