KY Economic Development officials in Columbia, KY

Those who attended the Columbia/Adair County Economic Development meeting, Wed 21 Oct 2014, remember that Megan Roe and Mitch Ruscitti of the Kentucky Department of Economic Development gave the group an update on an innovation to attact new employers: Instead of building costly spec buildings which may not meet the requirements of the next prospect, the state of Kentucky is encouraging communities to have "building ready sites," available for new employers to acquire and shorten the time it takes to be in business. The accompanying story announces that Henderson, KY, is the first community in Kentucky to have a building ready site. The idea was met with enthusiasm by Board Chair Dan Antle and others present including EDA members Randy Burns, Mark Dykes, Ann Martin, and Tony Corbin. - CM (c)

Laura Gupton gave a performance worthy of a KET presentation as her grandmother, Charlotte Temple Combest Russell (1950-1929), calling on a range of emotions from good humor and warmth to troubling sadness at he 2014 Silent City program, Monday, 27 Oct 2014. Laura Gupton is a third generation genealogist from Greensburg, KY. Her mother is genealogist Carolyn Gupton.

Scene seen from Silent Ciy 2014 - Almost red, with white & blue

It would be hard to imagine Columbia Cemetery without any of the three, especially in the annual Silent City performances the last Monday in October: The almost red of the red maple, the white of the Columbia Christian Church, and the iconic Blue Barn, all just outside the bounds of the cemetery.

Mike Watson portrays Capt. W.W. Bradshaw (1837-1912)

Always a favorite Silent City enactor Adair County Historian Mike Watson was at his most animated this year, delivering an unforgettable portrayal of Capt W.W. Bradshaw. A Civil War Soldier. Stepping out of character, Mr. Watson enumerated were figures from Capt. Bradshaw's post war life as a missionary for the American Sunday School Union, a career which centered on Kentucky, but included work in western Virginia, and Tennessee. He had established over 1040 Sunday Schools in 56 counties of Kentucky. One hundred two Sunday School students in those Sunday Schools became ministers of the Gospel. And over 900 were converted to the faith as a result of his work.

Mr. Richard Phelps as J.O. Russell (1856-1928)

Mr. Richard Phelps who has made many eloquent presentations at previous Silent City programs, portrayed one of the most important individuals in Adair County History, John Orion Russell. Stepping out of character, Mr. Phelps noted that "A life is not over until it is forgotten." A number of Mr. Russell's contributions to Adair County, including the Russell Building on the Square in Columbia and the First National Bank, now First and Farmers National Bank, which thrives to this day. - CM
