Spotlight on: Jessica Mays, new teacher at ACHS
2014-11-21 - 526 Indian DR, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. Jessica Mays, one of Adair County Schools new teachers this year, has proven herself to be without question - one in-a-million! She teaches Arts and Humanities and is resurrecting the choral program at Adair County High School. Oh yeah, did I mention she is also an Assistant Band Director during Marching Season? Then in her spare time she is constantly knitting. She made the beautiful hat and scarf she has on in this picture. Both the ACHS students and band students love her and we are all hoping she stays with us, for a very long time. Be keeping an eye out for information on her choral groups next performance!

2014-11-21 - 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne, Adair Co. School District.
This week has been college application week at Adair County High School. Teacher, Susan Peck, took the opportunity to tie the event into her daily lesson today by providing a guest speaker. She contacted a former student who just so happens to be a first year medical school student attending the University of Kentucky, Cameron Campbell, to see if he would be available to speaker with her Chemistry II, Anatomy and AP Biology Classes. Cameron graciously accepted the invitation to return to his alma mater. He spoke about the application process for medical school and then gave students a glimpse of what medical school itself consist of. Cameron graduated Adair County High School in 2009 and we wish him continued success in his academic pursuits. We look forward to calling him Cameron Campbell M.D. soon. Board hears how they did it: Shelbi Cheatham, Tyler Moore
2014-11-21 - Adair County School District - Photo by Shamarie Claiborne. Fast rising stars Shelbi Cheatham, left, and Tyler Moore, left, right photo, being congratulated by Supt. Alan W Reed, in photos above taken earlier by Shamarie Claiborne, spoke to the Adair County Board of Education last night, Thu 20 Nov 2014, about how they are accomplishing their goals. Shelbi Cheatham will be able to enter Lindsey Wilson as a junior, and as a student in their 4 year nursing program, needing only three years to accomplish that goal, thanks to LWC and Indian University. Cheatham said she'll also be on track to earn a Nurse Practioner Degree, her dream accomplishment. Tyler Moore told the board how he applied for a coveted apprenticeship at Dr. Schneider in Russell Springs, KY, and was one of two out of 44 applicants to land the award. As he works four hours a day at the plant he's also adding credit for his career path in welding.

Recognition for connecting the schools with the people
2014-11-21 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo (c) ColumbiaMagazine.com. The achievements of Shamarie Claiborne at the recent Kentucky School Board/Kentucky School Public Relations Association (STORY: Shamarie Claibornes takes six state KSBA/KSPRA awards ) were recognized again at the Adair County School Board on Thu 20 Nov 2014 by Supt. Alan Reed, reading from the Distinguished Award (top one given) for the new "Kid's Come First" graphics in the Board Room. Reed noted that Shamarie had shared the credits with others, including Reed, but said, that that was Claiborne's unselfish way, that she really deserved the credit. He said that Claiborne has given new meaning to the word "transparency," put everything the board does out in the open for public scrutiny. He said that the recipient had a quality in her writing style which distinguishes it from others. "She connects," he said. She has a way of connecting with people in a way no other person I know can."

Board Member Quin Lasley listens appreciatively
2014-11-21 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo (c) ColumbiaMagazine.com. Adair County Board of Education Member Quin Lasley listened with very apparent appeciation for the report of Adair County High School dramatic progress, reports of individual achievements in the classroom and on the athletic fields, and the culture change which has deleted the phrase "That's the way we alway's did it," from its memory banks. Lasley represents the Division 2. And yes, the smile was more pronounced at the mention of her nephew, sophomore football sensation Jordan Lasley.
