The ADAIR Band: with added meaning in 2014

2014-12-07 - Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM .
The banner isn't boasting. Just the facts. 20 State Championships. Three national championships just this year. There's always a feeling that the annual Christmas in Columbia Parade is a reality when the band is first heard at the top of Jamestown Hill, with quickening emotions as the volume increases as they come through The Dip, up Town Hill, onto the Public Square. Wow - they'll never talk about it - but this band has been truly inspirational, overcoming adversity which could have stopped some programs at the outset. But not this ADAIR Band. Not this latest in a continuing Tradition of Excellence which sets a high bar for other endeavors in the county. - EW

Rotary Club Breakfast: Gerald & Natasha, making breakfast

2014-12-07 - 201 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM .
The Rotary breakfast as well as the courthouse Chili, may go down in history as the keynote meals for Christmas in Columbia future. This moment looking in the picture window of the Baptist Church from the back parking lot, found Head Sausage Chef Gerald Holt and his daughter, Natasha hard at work. The breakfast was fantastic. Dr. Max Downey has found his calling scrambling eggs. Didn't get the name of the biscuit baker, but they were great, true to the tradition of the man the breakfast honors, the late Edgar Troutman. And J.D. Zornes gravy - the best. Even non-breakfast eater and Mayor-elect Curtis Hardwick gave highest praise to the meal. Haven't gotten a final report, but we're told it may have been a record crowd. - EW

The Grand Marshals: WWII veterans

2014-12-07 - 500 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM .
For so many, this was a moment of a lifetime, the moment of the parade, when the Baptist Church bus stopped in front of the historic Adair County Courthouse. Aboard were men from among our most treasured citizens, Adair County's veterans from World War II: Elbert Burton () Burton, Brooks Coomer, George Keltner, () Burris, Bro. Raymond Martin, Bob White, and Edgar Holmes. Joe Hare, VFW Post 6097, Commander, sums up his feelings about the day, "Every veteran, along with the general public were very pleased that the WWII veterans were the grand marshals. Their numbers are becoming very few and they deserve all the honors we can bestow upon them - they are the heros for all younger veterans." - LW
