Epicurean Kentuckian: Poor Man's Country Corner 2014-12-12 - 1100 Portland Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Life is leisurely in Portland, KY. But it's not as easy as it looks or Poor Man's Country Corner proprietor Herbert Janes, above, taking a well deserved break after the noon time rush, on Thursday, December 11, 2014. Janes said he bought the store, because he learned to love country stores in his travels as a heavy equipment operator. Now his world revolves around life as the proprietor just up the road from his home on Poor Man's Lane. He needed a country store to attend, too. So he bought this one from founder Garnett Baker. He's changed the interior to accommodate more diners, but the store retains its traditional feel. The food he serves is good. Yesterday his daughter, Sasha Powell prepared meatloaf, corn which tasted like it was just out of the garden, mashed potatoes and green peas, and a hoecake.
