History, Please: Who lived here in the 50s, 60s
2014-12-23 - Bomar Heights, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. There's progress on Bomar Heights, as a vacant house is taken down. A number of such structures in Columbia are in a similar state at this time. When I saw it yesterday, I was wondering if it were the home of the late Velva Vaughn, or Mr. Duvall's house. But couldn't remember which. Used to deliver a lot of Courier Journal morning news paper along here. The resident's were voracious readers. Few in those days chose the Sunday CJ and morning paper - a 45 cent a week like. But often neighbors took either the 15 cent Sunday or the 30 cent/nickel a day daily, and swapped with neighbors. I'm thinking there were four modest homes between Grissom Street and the field where Adair Memorial Hospital was built. Anyone remember the families? Anyone writing a history of he neighborhood? It was a beautiful place in the early 50s. The best view in the county, and dozens of homes dotted little lanes. They were hard to spot in spring, fall, and summer. But in winter, each one exhaled wood smoke, pin drops marking each location. At breakfast time, coffee aroma filled the lane, which, for some reason, always reminded one of country ham frying in a cast iron skillet. -EW.
