Dr. Joseph Schickel Veterans Memorial Park

2015-01-04 - 214 Upper River Street, Burkesville, KY - Photo Ed Waggener.
The monument to Dr. Joseph Schickel stands at the entrance to the park named in his honor, the Dr. Joseph Schickel Veterans Memorial Park. What a legacy it is, to him. It's hard to imagine another community park which works so well. It's in walking distance of practically every resident of the City of Burkesville and some 17 restaurants, the nursing home, the Senior Citizens Center, public schools and library, and yet it offers ample parking for the huge crowds which attend annual celebrations there. The Spirit of Cumberland County is evident in the other legacies within. On the left of the monument is the Paul and Phyllis Smith Outdoor Theatre. On the grounds, the original Morgan School House is a legacy to the late Chattin Chowning. There may be others within the park as well. The park is a big reason why Burkesville is no longer "Kentucky's Best Kept Secret." The word is out. It's a good "lab town" for other communities to visit and see how local goals are met with local solutions, and not just in parks. (Charities, too.) - EW

Rita, Redbone Coonhound mix, now available for adoption

2015-01-04 - Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer.
This is Rita. She is a Red Bone Coonhound mix. I think she might have Red Heeler in her by the markings on her paws. She's a friendly dog - good with children, adults, and other dogs. But she loves to chase cats. So as long as you don't have a cat Rita will be a great friend. She is spayed, vaccinated, and about 1 or 2 years old. Contact Peg at Sugarfoot Farm Rescue 270-378-4521 or 270-634-4675.
