Columbia City Council 5 Jan 2014: New look on the left

2015-01-06 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
With ten minutes to go before the start of the Mon 5 Jan 2015 regular session of the Columbia City Council the three members sitting on the left bank were in a lighter mood before the session began. From left, they are Dr. Ron Rogers, Charles Grimsley, and former Mayor, former Police Chief, and father of Baily Harris, Cindy Harris' husband, seated where long time Council Member June Parson sat for many years. Parson did not seek re-election as Councillor, running instead for Mayor.

Craig Lasley, new member of the Columbia City Council

2015-01-06 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
Craig Lasley a member of a prominent family in political leadership, took his seat as the first African American on the body in several years. Lasley was a close seventh in the 2010 election, but won this year at No. 5. He's the son of J.C. Lasley, the husband of Felicia Lasley (no wonder he won - CM), and the father of Jordan Lasley, and brother in law of second term Adair County School Second Division School Board Member Quin Lasley. In this photo taken before the meeting, members of the Columbia Boy Scouts, the big hit of last nights meeting, are seated, prepared to lead the Pledge of Allegiance at Mayor Hardwick's invitation. The Columbia City Council has been served by black Americans earlier, including Joe Taylor, Jr., and Joe Louis Graves - may others, may a city historian can lend a hand with that information. - CM

Mayor Curtis Hardwick begins 4th term

2015-01-06 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener.
Mayor Curtis Hardwick prior to the meeting start, was in a relaxed mood, in a very familiar place for him, as he presided over the Mon 5 January 2015 regular session of the Columbia City Council. It was a very brief session, last just over 10 minutes, with all Council Members present: Craig Dean, Linda Waggener, Craig Lasley, Dr. Ron Rogers, Charles Grimsley, and Mark Harris. On Mayor Hardwick's right, studying papers, is City Attorney Marshall Loy. Hardwick has served three previous terms. (Already a record? If there's a historian in the house, please let us know.) Photo taken prior to meeting start. - EW

Terry Hadley, Magistrate District 7 - takes second oath of office

2015-01-06 - Adair County Judicial Center, 201 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Terry Hadley, with Jonathan Hadley holding the Bible, was sworn in for a second time as Adair County Magistrate of District 7. Hadley served an earlier term representing the district, taking office in 2007. Hadley comes from one of Adair County's most distinguished political families. His father, Ben Hadley, served District 3 - in Southeast Adair County, for many years, as a Democrat. Terry Hadley, is a member of the Republican party, as are all of the class of 2015, but in recent decades, the party affiliations have not seemed to matter; coalitions may, but one is rarely aware of partisan affiliations. -EW

Green River Lake Mon 5 Jan 2015: 4 MSL make such a difference

2015-01-06 - Green River Lake Dam, Taylor County, KY - Photo by Larry Smith.
I always like to tour the lake shore in January. At the low winter stage area, it is almost like visiting an archeological dig. A bit of Taylor County is exposed around the shoreline. This year, work on the control tower at the dam, ahead in the photo, has necessitated lowering of the water level to a 664 feet above "Mean Sea Level," or "msl" in Corps-speak. The shore line reveals a lot these winter days. Even little treasures of debris, but a reminder, it isn't finders keepers; better check with the corps before picking up debris, and, I understand, using a metal detector on Corps property in the very strict Louisville District is forbidden. - LARRY SMITH, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications, FM 92.7 The WAVE and 99.9 FM the Big Dawg.

Gregg Caldwell sworn in as 6th District Adair Co. Magistrate

2015-01-06 - Adair County Judicial Center, 201 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Gregg Caldwell takes the oath of office as 6th District Magistrate, with his brother, Rev. Michael Caldwell, holding the Bible and brother George Caldwell at his side. County Judge Mike Stephens administered the oath. Mr. Caldwell succeeds the longest serving, of the past court, Magistrate, Joe Rogers. A side note, both Mr. Caldwell and County Judge Executive Mike Stephens broke an old political belief that those who serve as school board members in Adair County never get elected to countywide offices. Both were school board members years earlier.

Magistrate Coffey is now senior Magistrate on the 2015 Fiscal Court, and is 1st in Order of Succession should CJE Mike Stephens be unable to perform the duties of County Judge Executive. That was made official in an organizational meeting held Mon 5 Dec 2015.
