Staying in the game with the Big Boys

2015-01-16 - Lynns Service Center, 118 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Yesterday, Thu 15 Jan 2015, the hometown place had the best deal all the way around on gas. It was even with the lowest priced gas of one big retailer, and only 5cents a gallon above another. But the price at Lynn's included service, and, if you wanted to go in, a place to learn as much local news as you get off the internet, the radio, or local newspapers, it seemed.

Kentucky Color: Garnished Virginia Pine

2015-01-16 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester, Kentucky Division of Forestry.
It's a beautiful tree, and is referred to as "Virginia Pine" rather than "Virginia Scrub Pine." The wood is not of high quality, but is used locally to produce shavings for bedding. The cones are not only gorgeous outdoor decorations, but they also play a role in the crazy sex life of the tree, as explained in the accompanying piece. - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Favorite Old Photo: Old Coburg Store, ca 1940s

2015-01-16 - Coburg, KY - Photo from the collection of Larry Smith, FM 92.7 the WAVE and FM 99.9 The Big Dawg.
Wow! If this old store were still standing in Coburg, KY, it would be the biggest attraction in the area. Would love to know more about it. There are cues in the photo - the old Chevy coupe, the Texaco signs, the hand pumped glass bowl gas dispensers, and the advertising signs. Any comments would be appreciated. - Larry Smith, Operations Manager, Shoreline Communications.
