Cundiff Lake: Reminder of Acres of Diamonds; Lake Ray Hubbard 2015-02-05 - Pelham Branch Road at Adair Veterans Memorial Bypass, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Cundiff/Sapp Lake along Pelham Branch Road, just north of the Columbia City Limits, glistened like jewels in the noon day sun of Wed 4 Feb 2015. The scene was reminiscent of one of the late Dr. Oris Aaron's favoirite books, Russell Conwell's "Acres of Diamonds," the story of a man who sold his land and traveled the world seeking diamonds and finally see a glistening oceans and cast himself into it; and readers learn that the land he sold was home to one of the largest diamond minds ever. Lesson: There are fortunes to be made right where you are.. And it was reminiscent of a scene on I-30, travelling west, when Lake Ray Hubbard glistens as almost no other place with the same effect, magnified. On a visit with new neighbors not so far away in the Columbia City Cemetery, I couldn't help but notice the extraordinary detail of the changing face of Campbellsville Road afforded by the naked trees. at the bottom is the Russell Creek Bridge, no longer washed out frequently by freshets. The "billboard" at right is the side of William's Furniture Truck; on the right left, the Marathon billboard is at the corner of Parrott Avenue, north entrance, and Campbellsville Road. Dominant is the upper portion of the photo is, from left, the new Barney's Fun Center, home alleys for the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raider Bowling Team; in the center is Dr. Eric Loy's Adair Family Medical Center at 937 Campbellsville Road; and at right can be seen a part of the expanding Day & Day Food and Pet Center. In the top middle, towers are, at left, a cell phone antenna; and at right, the tallest antenna in Adair County, the Tv tower at the site of the old WGRB Tv studios in Cane Valley, KY, founded by recently deceased Billy Logan Speer, Taylor Co., KY (1931-2015). Turn right over Columbia? 2015-02-05 - City Limits, Dillon Street/Pelham Branch Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. On a most stunningly beautiful Wednesday, February 4, 2015, couldn't help but wonder about the contrail at the right of the Columbia City Limits sign. It appears an abrupt 90 degree turn was made by the aircraft in upper left of the photo. How did it happen. Don't know, but perhaps local aerospace enthusiasts can enlighten us, despite the into-the-sun, poorer quality photo. Apologies. -EW.
