The Whitehurst Diaries: Rough Green Snake

2015-05-19 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Jim Whitehurst. Sharon writes, "My tentative identification was smooth green snake [Opheodrys Vernalis] --although I went on to read about its 'cousin' the rough green snake [Opheodrys Aestivus.] The differentiating factor is 'keeled dorsal scales' on the rough green snake. Our neighbor, Jay Rose, assured me that the rough green is a local species, and this snake does indeed wear keeled scales."

Snapping Turtle I: Laying her eggs, Adair Co., KY

2015-05-19 - Greater Gadberry, KY - Photo by Charles Marshburn.
Charles Marshburn happened on a Snapping Turtle laying her eggs on Monday, 18 March 2015. Snapping Turtles have a particularly hostile demeanor - just a defense mechanism - and do bite humans when they feel they are in danger. And old timers said they wouldn't let go until it thundered. Snapping Turtle II: On her nest

2015-05-19 - Greater Gadberry, KY - Photo by Charles Marshburn.
After laying her eggs, Momma Snapping Turtle covers the nest. The turtles do bite when threatened, so it's best to leave them alone. Paired Photo: See also: Snapping Turtle I: Laying her eggs, Adair Co., KY

Wildlife of Kentucky: Urban Coyote

2015-05-19 - 1200 block, Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Junior Stotts, iPhone photo.
Junior Stotts caught this Coyote trespassing on his SE corner lot - The Chapman Place - Primary Election Eve, Mon 18 May 2015. Probably not the first time one's been this close to town, but it's the first one ever submitted to CM. That's Blue Raider Stadium directly across the Louie B. Nunn, Cumberland Parkway, top of frame. Diagonally across the interchange from the field is Kentucky State Police Post 15, so this guy is rather brazen. Who do you call when a coyote is spotted? Animal Control? KY Fish and Wildlife? The latter was really busy yesterday pinpointing the source of the fish kill in Russell Creek. Nearby Green River Animal Shelter has taken in a wolf-dog, but might not want a coyote.
