The perilous journey to the Flatwoods
2015-04-19 - Burkesville Road/KY 61, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. This terrapin was half way to the east side of the Chattanooga Highway at this point. It was headed for the Wheeler Hill road side of KY 61 S of Columbia. A kindly old turklephile interfered with nature and gave him a scoot on across to the paved shoulder, where, hopefully this God's creature headed into the woods again, to safety. Not sure which species of box turtle this one is, but some species are on the decline, in part because of what this one was about to become, roadkill. - EW

Today is a perfect day to appreciate Dogwoods
2015-04-19 - McDonalds, 980 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener. Today is an even better day to see dogwoods in bloom, on a wonderfully rainy, gray day when dogwoods are the brightest stars on stage. These were seen yesterday, at McDonald's drive-through, in Columbia.

George Rice/historic: The Log Dump from Corbin Bend Road
2015-04-19 - Corbin Bend Road, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo by George Rice. Today, this view from the Jericho Cliff on Corbin Bend Road, is of Holmes Bend Road. George Rice remembers stories his father told him of the day when the vantage point was known as "The Log Dump." That was before the writer's day, but he does remember scars left at the body of the cliff, before Green River Lake was impounded, which was evidence of the time when timbering was much different from today. Harvested logs were rolled over the bluff, then moved to the river, then lashed together with "raft logs," then floated downstream to a mill. It was dangerous work; George Rice recalls that his father, George Sr., helped with one float down the river. "When he got off," George Jr., remembers being told, "He was through." His river rafting career was complete.

The Gravesite for Wally: Wallaby Crossing at Sugarfoot
2015-04-19 - Sugarfoot Farm Rescue, 860 Sparksville Road, Columbia, KY - Photo by Peg Schaeffer. Wally, short for Wallaby, is buried in the garden so I can visit him while I'm working there. He has a special place under the lilac bush with mums that bloom in the fall. There’s a sign that says "Wallaby Crossing”. There’s also a headstone that says:
"If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I walk right up to heaven,
And bring you home again"
And I would and I will. - PEG SCHAEFFER
There's heightened interest finding proper burial places for pets. Some even want the laws changed on cemeteries so people can have pets buried with them or beside them. Some, including Adair CJE Mike Stephens, are dreaming of a pet cemetery to serve Adair County and nearby counties. There is interest from private groups, as well. This story is about Peg Schaeffer's solution to the need to pay proper respect and keep a special pet's memory alive. Comments on the need are welcome today, especially of special places pet owners would like to share, including photos. - CM
