Mayor Hardwick interview with Larry Smith
2015-04-07 - City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener . Larry Smith, right, interviewed Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick following the Mon 6 Apr 2015 regular meeting of the Columbia City Council. At the meeting, the council heard an impassioned presentation by Columbia Fire Chief Mike Glasgow related to city lease payments to house city fire apparatus, a suggestion for an ordinance to ban smoking in all public buildings, the first reading of an ordinance which would impose a $1/$100 property tax on certain abandoned property, and an insistent plea that Mary Ann Loy's plan for safer sidewalks and sane traffic control be implemented, in addition to other concerns in a fast paced 57 minute session.. The interview is scheduled to air at top of the hour news casts on the WAVE 92.7 FM and its sister station, the Big Dawg 99.9 today.

Searching for Mt. Tussell - Don't think this is it
2015-04-07 - Mt. Tussell Road, District 6, Knifley, Ky - Photo by Ed Waggener. Searching for Mt. Tussell, Sunday, April 5, 2015, we spotted a likely suspect, a baby knob, but locals don't give it as a possibility. It's near the junction of Burnett (private) road and Mt. Tussell Road. The source of the name is likely in the source of the name of the Old Mt. Tussell School. Any information on it, or it's location, would be appreciated. The buck used to stop with Squire Wallace Feese, later with Squire Joe Rogers, and now with the highest local official, Squire Greg Caldwell. Maybe, when the mystery is solved, it will be so obvious everyone concerned - mostly me, it seems - will wonder why they had been so dumb in the first place. My best guess is that "Mt. Tussell" was a name imported from somewhere else, may by the incomers of the day. (Maybe "North Carolina people"? A play on Mt. Russell? Near the Mayberry community of Mt. Airy?) - EW

Trees along banks, with roots undermined by flood - II
2015-04-07 - Russell Creek off Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Sammy Kassem. Sammy Kassem sends this photo of Russell Creek after a wider, more shallow Russell Creek has undermined the root system of trees along the bank, weakening them until one day they will fall into the street. He says that in the days when gravel was randomly harvested from Russell and Sulphur Creeks, holes were deeper upstream, retaining more water longer. There will be more on the effects of logging and its effect on stream quality, soon. Tree laps, as Dr. Ben Arnold suggested, may be major contributors to steam and bridge problems.

Russell Creek at KY 205 Bridge with debris under bridge - I
2015-04-07 - Fairground Street/Liberty Road Bridge, Columbia, KY - Photo by Sammy Kassem. Sammy Kassem, a lifelong resident beside Russell Creek, took this photo of recent flooding, when debris created this dam like situation, and, he writes, caused the creek to spread over a more shallow area. He says this leads to washout around root systems of trees lining the banks, and causes more and more trees to fall into the stream. He says the situation is worse without random harvesting of gravel from the creek bed.

Beautiful Creek Gravel in Crooked Creek
2015-04-06 - Crooked Creek, Mt. Tussell Road, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Some who know the streams like a family member advocated harvesting of the gravel bars occasionally. We're not taking a position that it's a good idea or not until more is learned. But it seems worth exploring until we know. This gravel bar is beautiful, but it is contributing to the overflow at this dry bridge. And if it could save money, produce some pretty byways, driveways, and functional, beautiful, low cost driveways and parking lots, wouldn't that be a plus at least worth studying? Comments welcome. - EW

Crooked Creek crossing flooded a bit.
2015-04-06 - Crooked Creek, Mt. Tussell Road, District 6, Adair County, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. David Abell, accross the stream moving hay with the help of his little grandson, knows within an inch of whether the dry bridge is passable or not. He gave the all clear for our tiny Mazda, but we decided not. The water over the bridge is higher because of gravel buildup on both sides of the structure. He said that removing the gravel would be a good idea. The gravel is highly prized by many, who prefer the look of country homes and lanes with the more rustic look creek gravel affords. - EW
