Blue Flag Iris. In this photograph of an Iris bud in my back yard, wild plant habitat garden, one can see the tinge of color. This bloodline, if you will, dates back to my Grandmother Mary Elizabeth Furkin Stotts' side of the family. - BILLY JOE FUDGE

Wildflowers of Kentucky: White and pink trillium

2015-04-25 - Johnson School Road, Fairplay, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
No mystery here, these are white and pink trillium, found on Johnson School Road near Fairplay, KY. They are relatively common this time of year, especially right now. The pink trillium, Wendy Butler Burt notes, is "actually an 'aged' Large Flowered trillium," in other words, she said, "it's the same species as the white flower but turns pink as the it ages." If the weather permits, the present is the best time to find and enjoy trillium. Linda and I make trillium searches day trip priorities during April. There's one sure patch, and it was bigger and brighter than ever this year: At the WAVE 92.7 slope of the Russell Creek Bridge about 8 miles East of Columbia, KY, five miles west or Russell Springs, KY and even closer to Royville, though a study of them, safely, requires parking by the creek and walking. They like wet, wooded slopes. These were found on Johnson School Road, a wildflower paradise. If you go to Johnson School Road: It's a county road, but treat it as if it were private. The natives are civilized, but, as in most areas of Adair County, they keep their roads clean, love their privacy, and generally are fully capable of self defense. Unless you have landowner permission, stay on public roads and drive carefully. Comments welcome: Especially with suggestions for other locations to see the trillium. - ED WAGGENER

Wildflowers of Kentucky: Mayapple Bloom 24 Apr 2015

2015-04-24 - Greater Gadberry, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
They're not uncommon, but are often hidden under the giant green leaves; moreover most of the plants don't have blossoms in any given year. When they do appear, Mayapple flowers add a nice accent plant. - EW
