Smokey Blue, aka Hat Trick, not as worthless as appears
2015-05-08 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Has it also puzzled you how people are willing to poke fun at one's hair, clothes coordination, even one's walk-away wheels, your tired old car? It's cruel, but endurable. It's part of life up with which we put - but we draw the line at criticism of our cat. Sometimes, the glimpse one gets of a cat is not the whole picture, as in the case of Smokey Blue, above, looking a bit unnecessary. What can't be fully appreciated is the performance Smokey put on while we were at table, watching his seven o'clock crazy antics. He had just defeated more than a dozen falling leaves. He had laid in wait for a chance to pounce a much larger butterscotch cat, and he stalked some groundhogs, but thought the better of a showdown with them. He is the most athletic creature in town. He can play soccer by himself for dozens of minutes at a time. And, if there were a soccer cat stadium here - perhaps the most needed new infrastructure facing the community at this time - he'd be the star. Hat Trick Smokey, they'd call him. Anybody else have a similar issue? Something needs to be done about it, now. - EW

Wildflowers of KY: Vinca Major - Periwinkles down by Old Waterworks
2015-05-08 - Waterworks Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. They're quite eyecatching, these relatively large blossoms - periwinkle or myrtle or vinca - growing along an urban country lane, Waterworks Street in Columbia, KY. This bloom was spotted across the road from the old Columbia Waterworks plant, soon to be razed by new owners Columbia Adair County Utilities to make way for a Trail Towns, USA, Paddle Trail park. Some work is already underway by Pyles Excavating Company. - CM
