The Changing Face of Fairground Street
2015-05-10 - VFW Fairgrounds from Waterworks Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Picture a graveled lane instead of macadam paving, remove the traffic signage, and this scene could easily be nearly what it was over 125 years ago. The barn was the old Floral Hall, and has continued to be part of the Annual Adair County Fair. Now the community is hearing of possibly new plans for the grounds. Fairground Street is the epicenter of change in Columbia, this year. The entrance from Campbellsville Street will be enhanced with the Town Creek redirection project, with work starting as early as Tuesday morning, May 12, 2015, reliable sources say. A new entrance to Lindsey Wilson College at Lindsey Wilson Street off Fairground is planned, with funding from the Senior Class of 2015 and the Class of 1965, but timing is yet to be announced. Going out of town, the Adair County Extension Service expansion is taking shape, doubling the size of the existing building aesthetics which easily blends with the somewhat eclectic architecture of the campus itself. Then, on Waterworks Street, razing of the old Columbia Utilities Water Plan is already underway. It's the start of a new stream side water park and the new launching spot for the Paddle Trail, which will bring Columbia, KY into the Trailtown USA system. - EW. Paired photo.
