2015-08-20 - Photo by Lee McClellan. Doves often alight in trees, such as this walnut, before descending to the field to feed. Dove season opens statewide Sept. 1. The bountiful rains this summer nurtured excellent field conditions which should mean productive hunting for the upcoming dove season.

Back in Time: Smoke Signals Volume 36, Issue 2
2015-08-20 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Russell Walker. Al Owens' recent trip through Seattle jogged ACHS alum Russ Walker's memory of a keepsake from the spring of 1986 -- a copy of Smoke Signals, the Adair County High School newspaper. He uploaded the paper to Flickr, and we've put together a PDF that you can download to read all 4 pages as a single document. In addition to Anthony Spires' front page story of the Academic Team's trip to the Sweet Sixteen, headed up by Walker, Shane Arnold, Brian Melton and Chris Rowe, Volume 36, Issue 2 of Smoke Signals also includes Felicia Wingler's article on FFA Awards, Kevin Wilson's article about Kristy Lemon making the Cheerleading Squad as a freshman, Tracy Miller's account of the '86 NCAA Champion UL Cardinals' visit to the ACHS gym, Robb Durham's article on ACT preparations, and several great ads from businesses past and present.

Snake enjoying lunch in Greenbo Lake State Park
2015-08-20 - Greenbo Lake State Park, Greenup, Greenup County, KY - Photo by Rich Ollestad. We almost stepped on this guy while hiking at Greenbo Lake State Park last week. He did not try to get out of our way. Then I saw why. He was trying to swallow a large lunch!! - RICH OLLESTAD. (The entree above is poor, dear Kermit. The diner is, as people call him in Adair County at all the stores where Plutarch is a popular topic, Coluber Constrictor, aka "Eastern Racer." Scientific name courtesy Alan W. Reed, who says this is a very beneficial, non-venomous snake.)
