A new flag, just in time for Memorial Day weekend
2015-05-22 - 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. We fly yet another flag - The American Flag is the focal point of the addition to the Adair County Extension Center campus on Fairground Street. The flag was installed just in in time for the Memorial Day weekend. The Extension Office signboard coordinated with the camera to mirror the new flag, and beyond, not visible, but unfurled at VFW Post 6097, at 411 Fairground Street, the American flag flies over a POW/MIA flag. The new extension office is closed through Tuesday, but the next day, Wed 8 May 2015, it will be open on a regular Mon-Fri schedule. As for the VFW Post, the Memorial Day service will be at 3pmCT, Sun 24 May, 2015. - CM

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Urban Horse Country
2015-05-22 - Hurt Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. A new neighbor at Roseland Plantation acknowledged the camera yesterday, or maybe the beautiful White Horse was wondering, "Where is the lady? Where are my apples?" Mrs. Marcum has spent the last few days over in Metcalfe County, but I think the horses know. I think they tell each other as they move in and out of the boarding facility. Mrs. Marcum knows their language, and could have interpreted. The horses can be seen this Memorial Day weekend, by taking the shortcut from Burkesville Street from Downtown to Uptown Crossing at Hurt & Jamestown Street. Take it very slowly and keep your eyes on the narrow road; you're travelling through a beautiful residential area of Columbia. One should never forget that even on public ways, the privacy of the dwellers ought be respected. - EW

The Trabue-Russell House's stunning Honeysuckle Bush
2015-05-22 - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Columbians share a passion for this almost whimsical cultivation of an oft-despised, frequently tortured plant which gives so many of us so much pleasure. We suspect, but haven't found out for sure, who nurtures this Honeysuckle Vine shaped into an ornamental bush at the Trabue-Russell House on Jamestown Street. (We'd like to know who originally thought to do this, to thank them for their vision). It presents a pleasing aspect to the Memorial Day glimpse of the preservation of historic residences in this neighborhood. On the right is the a glimpse of home of the late Dr. Oris & Jessie Aaron. The flag, appropriately accented with red geraniums, is the home of Columbia City Councillor Dr. Ron and his wife Gayle Rogers, and, just beyond, the home of Della Shaw. The honeysuckle bush and the Trabue Russell House reminds me of the days when I provided something of a Greyline tour of Columbia for prospective physicians and nurse practioners. Coming over Jamestown Hill, I could predict what each would say when they caught sight of the Historic Adair County Courthouse - "That's the most beautiful public building I ever saw." That fits in with maybe the primary purpose my wife, Linda and I had when Columbia! Magazine and its successor, ColumbiaMagazine.com was established: Economic Development in its truest sense, and in its most economical mode. Preservation and cultural aspects are so important if we want real Economic Development. - EW

Plaque, Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden
2015-05-22 - Trabue-Russell House, 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. For those of us who remember the establishment of the Julia Miller Horton Memorial Rose Garden by her husband, Dr. John Burns Horton, it seems like only yesterday. In fact, the garden will have its 38th birthday next month. The gardens have had, over the years, some rocky periods, but now, thanks to volunteer work by the Adair County Garden Club, it is thriving once again. It's a community treasure, owned and operated by the City of Columbia, and that thanks to philanthropist Jim Blair.

A must see on Memorial Day weekend
2015-05-22 - 201 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. The Julia Miller Horton Memorial Garden is becoming once again what the late Lindsey Wilson President John Burns Horton envisioned as a living tribute to his beautiful, gracious wife, Julia Miller Horton, thanks to intense labor by members of the Adair County Garden Club. This photo was taken Thursday, May 20, 2015. - EW
