Beleaguered Morning Glories make small comeback

2015-10-23 - Adams Alley, Columbia, KY - Photo by Joyce Coomer .
Well, my poor little, beleaguered morning glories have managed a small comeback and have been in bloom for the past couple of weeks. I hope freezing temperatures hold off long enough for them to produce viable seeds for next year's crop. - JOYCE COOMER

Lauren McQuaide, ACHS school board member contributes

2015-10-23 - Adair School Board Conference Room, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Lauren McQuaide, student member of the Adair County School Board, spoke while holding the text score handout provided by Adair County Schools Academic Dean Phyllis Curry. McQaide was elected to the seat by her peers. Photo taken Thu 22 Oct 2015, at a Special Regular board meeting (Special because the regular meeting is the 3rd Thursday of each month.) McQuaide spoke just a few minutes, but when she did, she provided important insight. She told the board how disappointed many of her friends in the arts were when an Arts & Humanities Career Pathway was peremptorily yanked by the new state commissioner of education just as Adair County High School was ready to implement the program. It was a disappointment stressed by Dean Curry, particularly since, for the past four decades, many Adair Band Alumna have excelled in careers in the arts. - Ed Waggener

Epicurean Kentuckian: Tomatoes as if it were late July

2015-10-23 - 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY - Photo CM photo.
Holly Kerns, Sano, KY (Phone 270-250-3437 ) a regular at the Adair Farmers Market, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, is set up this morning 6am-10amCT (or until inventory is sold, if earlier) with fall root groups, and, importantly, tomatoes of every sort. It's been an upside down growing season, she said, as early tomatoes got too much rain, and she wasn't at the market so much as usual. This morning, she has a not-unlimited supply of all kinds of tomatoes - big and little, red, yellow and green. For fried green tomato lovers, there's an ample supply, unusual for this time of year. (Don't worry about me, I got mine just after 6amCT). She's also plenty of traditional fall items: Pumpkins and Decorative corn, and white and red potatoes in all sizes, and white and red sweet potatoes in various sizes, , green onions, and mixed greens. By the way, we had a yellow tomato for breakfast and it was delicious, better texture, better flavor than we've every had in a yellow tomato. - EW
