Bounty from Matilda's Garden

2015-07-12 - Shelby County, KY - Photo photo by Mema, Linda Waggener.
Matilda shared a perfectly ripe tomato for an in-the-garden (doesn't get any fresher than that) basil wrapped tomato salad. It was part of a 45-minute salad-and-a-show theatre she hosted while we saw, in all-too short a time, the remarkable transitions she's going through following a recent fourth birthday. We learned that she's already "Matilda," but she graciously allows us to call her "Tillie." As the garden docent, she showed us where the sedum was blooming, where the marigolds where, the day- and tall tiger- lillies and hostas grew, and where the zinnia stood guard. As any gardener worries, she knew the tall stalks of corn might have to be shared with her squirrels, and how, over time, more of the lush carpet of bluegrass might be giving way to more raised bed gardens and a ground cover of moss, just as soft as grass, but more tickly, would take possession of a bit of running space in her princess' lawn and garden. - Granddad & Mema, Linda & Ed Waggener

Trees of Kentucky: Catalpa pods in the rain

2015-07-12 - Fortune Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM photo.
We don't eat, smoke, or brew the seeds of the Catalpa pod at our house nor do we recommend any of those uses. Others, including native Americans, have found uses for them and have even found them medicinal and some some cases, narcotic. As huge fans of this a bit-controversial tree, we always like to hear of it's possible economic impact: The market for catalpa worms as fishing bait, and the sale of it's wood. There's a neat Kentucky story in Dave's gardening by Kentuckian Sharon Brown, relating how the tree not only helped her through a college art course, but also became a source of college money. A surprise in the story is that carvings of catalpa wood are not only marketable - they are pricey, too. Read the entire revelation at this link: The Catalpa Tree, by Sharon Brown.

A nostalgic horse drawn wagon ride near Fishers Ford

2015-07-12 - Holmes Bend Park, Jericho, Columbia, KY - Photo by George Rice.
Junior Holmes, Center took Barry and Phil Bertram on a ride in a horse drawn wagon around the area of Holmes Bend Boat Dock. The Bertrams remember visiting the area on Green River back when it was free when Holmes Bend was known as Fishers Ford, and when the Bertram's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Risen, owned a farm which adjoined what is now Holmes Bend Marina. - GEORGE RICE. Photo taken Sat 11 Jul 2015.

A dream - of a white puppy - come true at GRAS

2015-07-11 - Green River Animal Shelter, 455 Appleby Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo by Kim Sallee, Director, Green River Animal Shelter.
Occasionally we have an adopter that instantly bonds with a certain dog/cat and we always like to think that it was meant to be. This sweet little girl had a dream that she got a white puppy for her birthday, so her parents brought her to the shelter.this week. She picked out her "almost" white puppy and they bonded instantly. We appreciate her family giving a shelter pet a chance. - KIM SALLEE, Green River Animal Shelter.
