2015-07-16 - Fountain Plaza, Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, CM.
Right after noticing the beauty of the flowers on the square in Columbia, thoughts turn to gratitude to the gardeners who give their time to brighten up our fair city. With all the challenges in all the corners of the city, county, state, nation, world, it makes a great difference when the heart can be lightened just by coming into contact with stunning creations of nature like these. -- LW

Copy of Attorney Statement for Board of Elections Appeal

2015-07-16 - Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY - Photo from office Adair CJE Mike Stephens.
The Adair County Fiscal Court has tabled a request by the Adair County Board of Elections to pay this bill for attorney's fees for the appeal to Judge Judy Vance's ruling invalidating the Tues, Nov. 4, 2014 City of Columbia Mayoral Race. CJE Mike Stephens has promised a decision will be made no later than the August 11, 2015 regular meeting of Adair Fiscal Court. Judge Stephens maintains that paying the bill may violate state law and that it was a post-election cost . Attorney Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin counters that it is an election expense the county is obligated to pay. Judge Stephens suggested that approval of this bill would give the court "ownership," of a situation which is a city concern, not a county wide one, and that the county might, by accepting responsibility for this statement be open to pay for any further appeals. The attorney for Ben Arnold, the write in candidate, said yesterday in a telephone interview that his client will appeal an adverse ruling by the Court of Appeals - which, he said, he does not expect to happen. Judge Stephens said that the appeal by the Board of Elections marks a first ever - the first time a Board of Elections has appealed a circuit court ruling. In all other cases of appeals, it has been the affected candidate. Curtis Hardwick, the candidate affected by Judge Vance's ruling, did not appeal. "Adair County does not have a dog in this fight," Judge Stephens said.
